Chapter LVII – The Evening Seed Drink Grandpa Never Missed

The Creamy Glass He Believed Helped Every Man Welcome a Peaceful Night

Every evening, after the garden had been watered and the tools returned to the shed, my grandfather sat quietly at the kitchen table with a tall glass of a creamy seed drink. It wasn’t coffee, nor tea, nor anything bought from a store. It was a recipe he had copied into his notebook decades earlier after meeting an old village physician who believed that simple foods, chosen wisely and eaten consistently, often became lifelong companions.

Grandfather called it “The Evening Glass of Gratitude.”

“A man who sleeps peacefully,” he often said, “begins tomorrow already stronger.”

One autumn evening he opened the notebook to a chapter titled “The Walnut-Sized Guardian.”

It was, of course, about the prostate.

Although no larger than a walnut, the prostate performs an extraordinary task throughout a man’s life. It produces part of the seminal fluid while working in constant partnership with hormones, blood vessels, nerves, and muscles. As men grow older, the prostate commonly enlarges—a condition known as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH)—which can contribute to symptoms such as frequent nighttime urination, a weak urine stream, and difficulty emptying the bladder completely. While no food or drink can shrink the prostate overnight, healthy lifestyle habits and a balanced diet may help support prostate health over time. (Mayo Clinic)

Grandfather simply wrote,

“The smallest organs often ask for the greatest patience.”

One page later, he drew a handful of pumpkin seeds.

“Never underestimate these,” he wrote.

Modern nutrition explains why they fascinated him. Pumpkin seeds naturally contain zinc, magnesium, plant protein, healthy unsaturated fats, and phytosterols. Zinc is especially interesting because healthy prostate tissue naturally contains high concentrations of this mineral, and researchers continue to study pumpkin seed oil and pumpkin seeds for their potential role in supporting urinary comfort in men with age-related prostate enlargement. But Grandpa never believed one ingredient deserved all the credit.

“Nature,” he liked to say,

“works as an orchestra, never as a solo.”

The recipe continued with several familiar ingredients.

Ground flaxseed, rich in fiber and lignans.

Chia seeds, providing fiber together with plant omega-3 fatty acids.

Rolled oats, offering beta-glucan fiber that supports heart health.

Walnuts, valued for healthy fats.

Blueberries, admired for their colorful polyphenols.

Grandfather believed every ingredient contributed something different.

Today, many dietary patterns associated with prostate health emphasize vegetables, fruits, whole grains, legumes, nuts, seeds, and healthy fats rather than relying on any single “superfood.” The Mediterranean-style pattern remains one of the most consistently recommended approaches for overall health. (Cleveland Clinic)

He also loved tomatoes.

Not because of their flavor alone, but because cooked tomatoes are one of the richest natural sources of lycopene, a carotenoid that has been widely studied in relation to prostate health. (Healthline)

“Every color,” he wrote,

“feeds a different part of the garden.”

The chapter then turned surprisingly scientific.

Grandfather described hormones as letters carried between distant villages.

Modern endocrinology explains that the prostate responds to hormones, particularly testosterone and dihydrotestosterone (DHT), while its cells continuously repair themselves, produce proteins, recycle worn-out components, and communicate through countless biochemical pathways. These processes depend on good nutrition, healthy circulation, restful sleep, regular movement, and overall metabolic health.

Grandfather summarized all of physiology in one beautiful sentence.

“Healthy cells prefer ordinary days filled with extraordinary habits.”

Grandpa’s Evening Seed Smoothie

Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon pumpkin seeds
  • 1 tablespoon ground flaxseed
  • 1 tablespoon soaked chia seeds
  • ½ cup blueberries
  • ½ cup plain Greek yogurt
  • 1 cup unsweetened almond milk
  • A pinch of cinnamon

Blend until smooth and enjoy alongside a light evening meal. Grandfather believed the smoothie wasn’t meant to replace wholesome food but to accompany a colorful diet rich in vegetables, legumes, fish, nuts, seeds, and fruit.

On the final page of the chapter, Grandfather had written words that remained folded inside the notebook for decades.

“People often ask for one drink that changes everything.”

“But the body has always preferred something quieter.”

“One nourishing breakfast.”

“One peaceful walk.”

“One good night’s sleep.”

“One colorful meal.”

“Repeated again tomorrow.”

“Because lasting health is never poured into a single glass…”

*”It is patiently built, one faithful day after another.”
