The Kitchen Ingredient She Sprinkled Into Breakfast Every Morning

There was a small glass jar on the highest shelf of my grandmother’s pantry that visitors almost never noticed. It wasn’t filled with sugar, flour, or spices. Inside were tiny golden flakes that shimmered in the morning sunlight like fine pieces of amber. Every breakfast, she reached for the same wooden spoon and scattered a little over eggs, warm vegetables, or homemade soup.

“People think this is seasoning,” she would smile.

“I think it’s nourishment.”

One day I asked why she never forgot those golden flakes.

She opened her notebook to a chapter called “The Eyes Never Truly Rest.”

“Even while you sleep,” she whispered, “millions of tiny cells inside your eyes are working to greet tomorrow’s sunrise.”

Years later I discovered she was describing something extraordinary.

The retina—the delicate layer lining the back of the eye—is one of the most metabolically active tissues in the human body. Every second, its cells consume oxygen, recycle light-sensitive molecules, repair microscopic damage, and communicate with the brain through millions of nerve fibers.

Grandma never spoke about retinal neurons.

She simply wrote,

“The eyes are always busy, even when they are closed.”

Her favorite ingredient was nutritional yeast.

She loved it because of its rich, nutty flavor, but she admired it even more because it naturally provides an impressive collection of B vitamins and high-quality protein. Many fortified varieties also supply vitamin B12, a nutrient involved in normal nerve function and energy metabolism. Research has explored how adequate intake of several B vitamins may contribute to maintaining healthy eye tissues as we age. (PubMed Central (PMC))

Another page in the notebook was filled with drawings of dark green leaves.

Spinach.

Kale.

Parsley.

Broccoli.

Grandma believed they belonged beside the golden flakes.

Modern nutrition explains why. These vegetables naturally contain lutein and zeaxanthin, two carotenoids that accumulate in the macula—the central part of the retina—where they help filter high-energy blue light and contribute to normal visual function. (WebMD)

“Green leaves,” she wrote,

“feed the windows through which we see the world.”

Another chapter fascinated me because it wasn’t really about eyesight.

It was about blood vessels.

Grandma believed healthy vision depended on healthy circulation.

Today we know the eyes are nourished by an extraordinary network of microscopic capillaries that continuously deliver oxygen and nutrients to the retina and optic nerve. Those tiny vessels work every second without rest, supplying one of the body’s most active tissues.

“Every sunrise,” she wrote,

“arrives through thousands of tiny rivers.”

Grandma’s Golden Breakfast Bowl

Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons nutritional yeast
  • 2 eggs
  • Fresh spinach
  • Half an avocado
  • Extra virgin olive oil
  • Fresh parsley

Grandma gently sautéed the spinach in a little olive oil, added softly scrambled eggs, sprinkled generous spoonfuls of nutritional yeast across the top, and finished everything with fresh parsley and slices of avocado. She believed healthy fats helped the body absorb valuable fat-soluble nutrients from colorful vegetables, making every breakfast both satisfying and nourishing.

Near the end of the chapter, beneath a pressed spinach leaf, Grandma had written one final lesson.

“People spend their lives searching for brighter ways to see the world.”

“But perhaps the first step is simply nourishing the remarkable eyes that have quietly shown it to us every single day.”

“Feed them colorful foods.”

“Protect them with restful sleep.”

“Welcome every sunrise with gratitude.”

“Because the greatest view is not found through younger eyes…”

*”It is found through eyes that have been lovingly cared for through every beautiful season of life.”
