Chapter LIII – The Green Drink Grandpa Prepared Before Sunrise

The Garden Recipe He Believed Every Man Should Know

The oldest wooden cup in my grandfather’s kitchen was never used for coffee.

Every morning before the sun touched the garden, he filled it with a deep green drink that looked more like freshly cut grass than breakfast. Neighbors laughed at first. Years later, many quietly asked him for the recipe.

Grandfather only smiled.

“The body doesn’t grow stronger from one miracle,” he would say. “It grows stronger from thousands of faithful mornings.”

One page of his notebook carried a title that caught my attention immediately.

“The Quiet Gland Every Man Should Respect.”

He was talking about the prostate.

Although only about the size of a walnut, the prostate plays an important role in the male reproductive system by producing fluid that helps nourish and protect sperm. Throughout life it responds to hormones, nutrition, aging, circulation, and countless biochemical signals. Grandfather believed that caring for this small gland was simply another way of caring for the entire body.

“The smallest rooms often protect the greatest treasures,” he wrote.

Years later I learned that the prostate is constantly supplied by an intricate network of tiny blood vessels carrying oxygen, amino acids, minerals, hormones, and nutrients to millions of living cells. Every second, those cells produce proteins, repair DNA, recycle worn-out components, and communicate through thousands of chemical messengers.

Grandfather called this,

“The conversation of life.”

His green drink contained ingredients that filled several pages of the notebook.

Fresh parsley.

Spinach.

Celery.

Cucumber.

Pumpkin seeds.

Half a lemon.

A small piece of fresh ginger.

He believed every ingredient brought its own quiet gift.

Spinach and parsley naturally provide vitamin K, folate, and a variety of antioxidant compounds. Pumpkin seeds contribute zinc, magnesium, healthy unsaturated fats, and plant protein. Zinc is particularly interesting because healthy prostate tissue naturally contains high concentrations of this mineral, and it plays a role in many normal cellular processes. (Healthline)

Grandfather especially admired tomatoes, even though they weren’t part of the green drink.

“Never forget the red fruits,” he wrote.

Cooked tomatoes are one of the richest dietary sources of lycopene, a carotenoid that has been extensively studied for prostate health. Lycopene is absorbed especially well when tomatoes are cooked and eaten with a small amount of healthy fat such as olive oil. Research continues to explore its role in supporting normal prostate function as part of an overall healthy dietary pattern. (Cancer.gov)

“Nature paints its medicines in many colors,” Grandpa liked to say.

Another fascinating page explored circulation.

Grandfather compared blood vessels to rivers feeding every village in a kingdom.

Modern physiology explains that the health of every organ depends on an uninterrupted delivery of oxygen and nutrients through these vessels. The prostate is no exception. A balanced eating pattern rich in vegetables, fruits, whole grains, healthy fats, fish, and seeds—often called the Mediterranean diet—is consistently associated with better overall health and is commonly recommended as a foundation for supporting prostate health. (Mayo Clinic)

“Healthy rivers,” he wrote,

“feed healthy fields.”

On the final page of the chapter, Grandfather had written words that remained with me long after the notebook was closed.

“People search for one drink to solve every problem.”

“But the body has always preferred something simpler.”

“Feed it well.”

“Walk every day.”

“Sleep peacefully.”

“Fill your plate with living foods.”

“And remember that lasting strength is rarely found in dramatic promises…”

“It is quietly grown through ordinary habits, repeated with extraordinary consistency.”
