Olivia Newton-John’s Love Story Was More Complicated Than Grease: A Younger Husband, a Mysterious Disappearance & the Man Beside Her at the End

For millions of people, Olivia Newton-John will forever be linked with John Travolta. Their chemistry in Grease was so convincing that rumors about the pair followed them for decades. But away from the cameras, Olivia’s romantic life unfolded very differently — through a marriage that gave her an only daughter, a relationship that ended in a haunting disappearance, and finally a love that remained beside her through the most difficult years of her life.

Rare photos from those chapters reveal a side of Olivia far removed from Sandy Olsson and the Hollywood spotlight.

John Travolta and the Romance That Never Was

The attraction audiences saw between Olivia and John Travolta was real in the sense that the two shared an unusually warm connection, but they never became a couple.

Their friendship endured for decades after Grease. The romance belonged to Danny and Sandy, even if fans continued wondering what might have happened between the actors themselves.

Olivia’s real love story soon led her somewhere completely different.

Matt Lattanzi — Her Younger Husband and the Father of Her Daughter

While making Xanadu in 1980, Olivia met actor and dancer Matt Lattanzi. She was more than a decade older than him, but the age difference didn’t prevent the relationship from becoming serious. They married in December 1984. Wikipedia

Then came one of the most important events of Olivia’s private life.

On January 17, 1986, she and Matt welcomed their daughter, Chloe Rose Lattanzi. Rare family photographs from the period show Olivia not as an international superstar but simply as a young mother, often holding Chloe close while Matt stood beside them. Wikipedia

Their marriage eventually came to an end. Olivia and Matt announced their separation in 1995 and divorced the following year, but they remained connected through Chloe and maintained a friendship after separating. Wikipedia

The Man Who Vanished

After her marriage, Olivia began an on-and-off relationship with cameraman Patrick McDermott.

They were together for approximately nine years before an event turned their relationship into one of the strangest chapters of Olivia’s life.

In June 2005, McDermott boarded a fishing boat off the California coast.

He never returned.

The U.S. Coast Guard investigation later concluded that the available evidence indicated McDermott had most likely been lost at sea. Over the years, sensational claims surfaced alleging that he might still be alive, but those theories were never substantiated. The Irish Times

For Olivia, there was no simple ending.

She later described how difficult the uncertainty was, saying that she went “back and forth” while trying not to become consumed by speculation. CBS News

It was a painful kind of loss — one without the certainty of a conventional goodbye.

Then Came John Easterling

Olivia had known businessman John Easterling for years before their friendship became romantic. According to Easterling, the two spent roughly 12 years as platonic friends before their relationship changed. Yahoo

They married in 2008, first taking part in a private ceremony in Peru and later holding a legal ceremony in Florida. Biography

This relationship would become Olivia’s final love story.

Easterling remained beside her as the breast cancer she had first faced in 1992 returned and eventually became metastatic. Newton-John disclosed in 2017 that the disease had spread to her lower back. The Irish Times

Through those years, Olivia continued working, advocating for cancer research and supporting the Melbourne cancer center that carries her name.

The Daughter Who Remained at the Center of Everything

Through every change in Olivia’s personal life, Chloe remained a central presence.

Mother and daughter occasionally performed together, appeared publicly together and shared a bond that Chloe has continued to speak about since Olivia’s death.

After losing her mother, Chloe became involved in continuing Olivia’s charitable legacy, including the annual Walk for Wellness benefiting the Olivia Newton-John Cancer Wellness & Research Centre.

The photographs of them together during Olivia’s later years feel particularly poignant now: the little girl seen in those RARE family photos from the 1980s had grown into the woman standing beside her mother decades later.

Her Final Love Story

Her life contained the kind of twists that even Hollywood might have struggled to write: extraordinary fame, a younger husband, motherhood, divorce, the unexplained disappearance of a longtime partner, and finally a marriage that lasted through her final years.

But perhaps the RARE PHOTOS tell the story more quietly than any headline can.

They show Olivia at very different stages — young and newly famous, holding her daughter, standing beside the men she loved, and finally smiling alongside the husband who remained with her through the closing chapter of an extraordinary life.
