I Started Using an Onion Hair Lotion… Here’s Why It’s Still Part of My Weekly Routine

Sarah Jenkins

For years, I tried countless hair products that promised thicker, fuller hair. Some were expensive, others smelled wonderful, but very few became part of my routine. Then I decided to try a simple homemade onion lotion that had been recommended by a family member.

At first, I wasn’t sure what to expect. I simply wanted to give my scalp a little extra care. After using it consistently for several weeks, I found that my hair felt healthier, my scalp felt refreshed, and taking a few minutes each week for hair care became a habit I genuinely enjoyed.

My Homemade Onion Hair Lotion

You’ll need:

  • 1 medium onion
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 tablespoon aloe vera gel (optional)

Blend or grate the onion and strain the juice through a fine cloth or sieve. Mix the onion juice with the water and stir in the aloe vera gel if you’d like a gentler feel.

Pour the mixture into a clean spray bottle.

How I Use It

I spray the lotion directly onto my scalp, gently massage it in with my fingertips for about five minutes, and leave it on for 20–30 minutes before washing my hair with a mild shampoo.

I usually repeat this routine once or twice a week.

Why I Keep Using It

For me, the biggest benefit has been creating a consistent scalp-care routine. The gentle massage feels relaxing, and taking time to care for my hair encourages me to slow down for a few minutes.

I also enjoy pairing this routine with a nourishing diet and good hair-care habits.

The Habits That Helped Me Most

Along with using this homemade lotion, I also try to:

  • Eat enough protein every day.
  • Include foods rich in fruits, vegetables, and healthy fats.
  • Avoid excessive heat styling whenever possible.
  • Stay hydrated.
  • Get enough restful sleep.

I’ve found that these everyday habits work together and help my hair look and feel its best.

Today, this homemade onion hair lotion remains one of my favorite natural hair-care routines. It’s inexpensive, easy to prepare, and fits perfectly into my weekly self-care ritual. While everyone’s experience is different, it’s a tradition I enjoy and one that has helped me stay consistent with taking better care of my hair.
