There are few things more exhausting than a cough that just won’t let up. It interrupts your sleep, leaves your throat feeling irritated, and can make even a simple conversation feel like hard work. When cold season comes around, many families reach for warm soups, herbal teas, and old kitchen recipes that have been passed down through generations.
One recipe in particular has stayed in my family for as long as I can remember.
My grandmother always believed that when you weren’t feeling your best, the first place to visit was the kitchen. She’d slowly prepare a warm, fragrant remedy while the whole house filled with a comforting aroma.
Years later, I still make it whenever I want something warm and soothing during cold season.
Why Warm Drinks Can Feel So Comforting
When your throat feels dry and irritated, warm beverages can be incredibly soothing. Staying well hydrated also helps keep mucus thinner, making it easier to clear your airways naturally.
That’s one reason homemade drinks have remained so popular for generations—they’re simple, comforting, and encourage you to rest and drink more fluids.
One ingredient my grandmother never skipped was cloves.
Their rich, spicy aroma gives the drink its distinctive flavor, and they pair beautifully with other kitchen staples like cinnamon, lemon, or fresh ginger.
My Grandmother’s Clove Drink
You’ll need:
- 5–6 whole cloves
- 1 cinnamon stick
- 2 cups of water
- 1 teaspoon honey (optional, after the drink has cooled slightly)
- A squeeze of fresh lemon (optional)
Bring the water to a gentle boil and add the cloves and cinnamon. Reduce the heat and let everything simmer for about 10–15 minutes.
Strain into your favorite mug. Once the drink has cooled slightly, stir in the honey if desired and finish with a squeeze of fresh lemon.
I like to sip it slowly while it’s still warm.
The Other Things I Always Do
Whenever I’m dealing with a stubborn cough, I also make sure to:
- Drink plenty of warm fluids throughout the day.
- Enjoy nourishing soups and balanced meals.
- Get extra rest whenever possible.
- Keep the air from becoming too dry indoors.
- Avoid cigarette smoke and other respiratory irritants.
I’ve found that these simple habits make a big difference in helping me feel more comfortable.
Today, this warm clove drink is still one of my favorite family traditions. It’s easy to prepare, made with simple pantry ingredients, and gives me a reason to slow down and take care of myself. Sometimes, the most comforting recipes aren’t the most complicated—they’re the ones lovingly passed from one generation to the next.
