ADELE SHED A REPORTED 100 LBS AFTER YEARS OF BEING KNOWN FOR HER SIGNATURE CURVES β€” HER BEFORE & AFTER PHOTOS SHOW A STRIKING TRANSFORMATION

When Adele first stepped onto the international stage in the late 2000s, there was very little about her that felt manufactured. She had the enormous voice, the sweeping eyeliner, the heartbreak songs, and a refreshingly ordinary relationship with celebrity. Her fuller figure became part of the image millions of people associated with the young British singer, even though Adele herself repeatedly made it clear that her music mattered far more to her than her dress size.

Then, more than a decade into her career, Adele seemingly disappeared from public view — and when photographs began emerging again, people could hardly believe how much she had changed.

The transformation ultimately amounted to roughly 100 pounds, according to Adele herself. But the story behind those photographs wasn’t the conventional celebrity diet story many assumed it was.

For Adele, it began during one of the most emotionally difficult periods of her life.

The Adele people first fell in love with

At the 2009 Grammy Awards, a 20-year-old Adele walked the red carpet in a black satin dress, her auburn hair swept to one side. That evening she collected her first two Grammys, including Best New Artist.

She was only beginning a career that would become enormous.

As 19 gave way to 21, Adele’s fame exploded. Yet her appearance was repeatedly dissected alongside her music.

Years later, she told Vogue that she had become comfortable in her own skin and liked the way she looked. Even before her most dramatic transformation, she’d made some lifestyle changes — including giving up smoking and substantially reducing alcohol — partly because she wanted more stamina for touring. (Vogue)

Then her personal life changed dramatically.

Her marriage ended, anxiety became overwhelming, and Adele discovered something that made her feel better: exercise.

“It was because of my anxiety”

When Adele finally spoke extensively about her transformation in 2021, she explained something that had largely been lost amid all those before-and-after headlines.

Losing weight hadn’t originally been the objective.

Training became a way of coping with anxiety during the period surrounding her divorce. Adele told Vogue that exercising made her feel better and gave structure to days that otherwise felt emotionally overwhelming. (Vogue)

She threw herself into it.

At certain points, Adele said she was exercising multiple times a day: weights in the morning, hiking or boxing later, and cardio in the evening. She also emphasized that she had considerable professional support and acknowledged that such an intensive routine isn’t realistic for most people. (Vogue)

Slowly, her body began changing too.

Then one photograph nearly broke the internet

In May 2020, Adele posted a photograph celebrating her 32nd birthday.

The reaction was immediate.

After months of keeping a relatively low profile, Adele appeared in a fitted black mini dress with a dramatically slimmer silhouette. Social media erupted, headlines spread around the world, and suddenly everyone wanted to know what she had done.

But Adele wasn’t documenting the transformation publicly while it happened.

That was deliberate.

She later pointed out that she had transformed her body over approximately two years rather than two weeks — people simply hadn’t been watching the process unfold. (Vogue)

That distinction explains why the before-and-after photographs seemed so extraordinary.

To the public, it appeared almost instantaneous.

To Adele, it had been years of work.

The transformation reached roughly 100 pounds

By the time Adele returned to the spotlight to promote 30 in 2021, she openly discussed losing approximately 100 pounds.

Her face was noticeably leaner. Her waist and overall silhouette had changed dramatically. Yet perhaps the most surprising part of the story was Adele’s insistence that becoming thin had never been the central motivation.

Exercise had made her stronger.

It had given her somewhere to put her anxiety.

And during a period when much of her personal life felt unstable, training became something predictable that belonged entirely to her. (Vogue)

That perspective also helps explain why she resisted much of the public narrative surrounding the transformation.

Adele hadn’t suddenly decided the woman in the earlier photographs wasn’t good enough.

She had repeatedly expressed confidence in herself before losing the weight.

Her old and new photos tell two very different visual stories

Look at Adele at the Grammys in 2009 and then compare that image with photographs taken during her 30 era or her Las Vegas residency.

The difference is enormous.

The auburn-haired young singer with a fuller face and figure gradually became the glamorous blonde performer audiences saw commanding the stage at Caesars Palace.

Her fashion evolved alongside her body. The flowing black dresses of her earlier career increasingly gave way to more fitted silhouettes, dramatic couture gowns and Old Hollywood styling.

But one thing barely changed at all: Adele continued gravitating toward black.

When she finally opened her Weekends with Adele residency in Las Vegas in November 2022, she walked onto the stage wearing a custom black velvet Schiaparelli gown with an off-the-shoulder neckline and gold detailing.

The visual contrast with that young woman photographed at the Grammys 13 years earlier was remarkable.

She also confronted the reaction to her smaller body

There was another side to Adele’s transformation that she hadn’t anticipated.

Some people celebrated the weight loss intensely. Others said they felt disappointed because they had viewed Adele as someone who represented women with larger bodies.

Adele addressed both reactions.

She explained that she understood why her changing appearance might trigger complicated feelings for some people, but emphasized that her body had been objectified throughout her career regardless of its size. Her responsibility, she suggested, couldn’t be to maintain one particular body simply because strangers had attached meaning to it. (Vogue)

It was an unusually candid acknowledgment of something celebrity transformations rarely address.

The person losing weight doesn’t stop being the person who existed before it.

From 19 to her Las Vegas era

Adele’s photographs now document almost two decades of change.

There is the 20-year-old at the 2009 Grammys.

There is the global superstar of the 21 era, with her voluminous hair, black dresses and signature eyeliner.

There is Adele during 25, already making lifestyle changes and talking about becoming healthier for the demands of touring. (Vogue)

And then there is the woman who reemerged around 2020 after losing roughly 100 pounds.

Placed together, the photographs create one of the most recognizable celebrity transformations of recent years.

But Adele has consistently resisted reducing those years to a weight-loss story.

Her marriage ended. She became intensely focused on dealing with anxiety. She went through therapy. She trained. She became stronger. She wrote 30. And eventually she returned to performing, including an extensive Las Vegas residency.

The slimmer body was one visible consequence of a much larger period of change. (Vogue)

Perhaps that’s why the old and new photographs remain so striking.

At first glance, they show a woman who lost around 100 pounds.

Look a little longer, though, and they document something much bigger: nearly two decades in the life of a singer who became one of the world’s biggest stars — and changed enormously while the world was watching.
