They Opened the Hatch and Stepped Into Space — For the Next 6½ Hours, There Was Nothing Beneath Them but Earth

On August 25, 2026, NASA astronaut Anil Menon and European Space Agency astronaut Sophie Adenot opened the hatch of the International Space Station and stepped into a place where there was no ground beneath their feet, no air around them and no possibility of simply walking away if something went wrong. Hundreds of miles below, Earth stretched across their view in enormous sweeps of blue ocean, white clouds and distant land, while directly in front of them waited a much less poetic problem: a failed communications antenna that had to be replaced. What followed was a six-and-a-half-hour operation outside the station, performed while the orbital laboratory continued racing around the planet.

The photographs make the experience look almost peaceful. Against the darkness of space, the astronauts appear to float effortlessly beside the metallic structure of the station, with the curved Earth filling the background like an impossibly beautiful painting. The reality, however, was far more demanding. Every movement had to be deliberate, every tool had to remain secured and every task had to be completed while the astronauts worked inside bulky pressurized spacesuits that functioned as miniature spacecraft, supplying oxygen, regulating temperature and keeping them alive in an environment the human body could never survive unprotected.

The mission centered on a Space-to-Ground antenna, part of the system that carries high-speed communications between the International Space Station and Mission Control in Houston. From Earth, replacing an antenna might sound like routine maintenance, but there is very little that is routine about repairing equipment attached to a spacecraft while orbiting the planet. The failed unit was positioned on the station’s Z1 truss, and Menon and Adenot had been tasked with removing the damaged equipment and bringing its replacement online.

There was another reason the August 25 operation mattered: they had already tried to finish the job once before. Just seven days earlier, on August 18, Menon and Adenot had spent 6 hours and 23 minutes outside the station working on the same repair. They managed to disconnect the failed antenna and secure it, but stubborn hardware and the complexity of the work consumed valuable time, leaving the replacement unfinished. Instead of rushing the remaining steps, the crew returned inside and prepared to attempt the final installation during another spacewalk.

A week later, they were back outside.

This time Menon traveled toward the worksite with help from Canadarm2, the station’s enormous robotic arm, while Adenot helped release the spare antenna from its external storage location. Together they maneuvered the replacement hardware into position, working through a carefully planned sequence that had been practiced long before either astronaut ever left Earth. Inside the station, other crew members supported the operation, while Mission Control followed their progress from Houston.

It is difficult to appreciate just how strange their workplace was. There was no workshop floor beneath them and no table where they could casually place a tool; beyond the station’s structure was open space, while far below them the planet continued rolling silently through their field of view. Even something as ordinary as turning a bolt becomes different when it must be done through thick pressurized gloves, with the astronaut’s body restrained and every piece of equipment secured so that it cannot drift away.

For Adenot, the two August excursions carried another distinction. Her August 18 spacewalk was her first, making her the first French woman to perform a spacewalk, while Menon was completing his second. By August 25, however, they were already returning to an environment they had experienced together only days earlier, this time determined to complete the job that had forced them back inside the previous week.

Eventually, the replacement antenna was secured and the necessary electrical and data connections were made. At that point, the astronauts could do little more than wait for confirmation from the systems designed to tell engineers whether all those hours of work had actually succeeded. NASA reported that the initial power and data checks were successful, indicating that the newly installed antenna was functioning as intended.

That simple confirmation represented the end of considerably more work than the photograph suggests. Across two spacewalks in only eight days, Menon and Adenot had spent nearly 13 hours outside the International Space Station, first preparing the failed system for replacement and then returning to finish installing its successor. There was no dramatic emergency and no spectacular moment of rescue, yet that is precisely what made the operation successful: an extraordinarily complicated repair was completed without the drama that spaceflight can produce when something goes wrong.

The International Space Station has been continuously occupied for decades, and keeping such a complex laboratory functioning requires constant maintenance. Equipment ages, components fail and systems occasionally have to be replaced in places that no technician on Earth can simply reach with a ladder. Spacewalks therefore remain one of the most remarkable forms of maintenance imaginable, combining engineering with an environment where the protective suit surrounding an astronaut is effectively the only thing separating an ordinary working day from the vacuum of space.

At 2:57 p.m. EDT, after exactly 6 hours and 30 minutes outside, the spacewalk came to an end. Menon and Adenot returned to the station knowing that the antenna they had traveled outside twice to replace was finally responding to power and data checks.

Perhaps that is why the photographs from the mission are so striking. At first glance, they show an astronaut floating serenely above Earth, surrounded by the almost impossible beauty of space. Look a little longer, however, and the image tells a different story: inside that white suit is a human being concentrating on a highly technical repair while an entire planet moves beneath him, connected to the spacecraft by equipment, training and a carefully rehearsed sequence of decisions.

For six and a half hours, there was nothing beneath those astronauts but Earth. Yet they weren’t outside to admire it. They had a broken piece of the International Space Station to fix, and after two spacewalks, nearly thirteen hours outside the spacecraft and a week-long interruption that forced them to return for a second attempt, the message from NASA was finally the one everyone had been waiting for: the new antenna worked.
