13 Surprising Ways I Use Castor Oil Around the House and in My Self-Care Routine

William Turner

For years, I thought castor oil had only one purpose. Then I started learning about the many practical ways people have used it for generations. Curious, I tried a few of these ideas myself, and today it’s one of the most versatile items I keep at home.

Here are some of my favorite ways to use it.

1. A Deep Moisturizer for Dry Skin

I massage a few drops onto my hands, elbows, knees, or heels before bed. By morning, my skin feels noticeably softer and smoother.

2. Overnight Foot Care

Before going to sleep, I apply a thin layer to my feet and put on a pair of cotton socks. I wake up with feet that feel much more hydrated.

3. Cuticle Care

A tiny drop massaged into each cuticle helps keep them looking neat and moisturized.

4. Eyebrow Conditioning

I lightly apply a small amount to my eyebrows in the evening to help keep the hairs soft and well-groomed.

5. Lash Care

Using a clean spoolie, I gently brush a tiny amount onto my eyelashes before bed as part of my nighttime beauty routine, taking care to avoid getting it in my eyes.

6. Dry Elbows and Knees

These areas often need extra moisture, and castor oil is one of my favorite overnight treatments.

7. Hand Massage

After gardening or housework, I massage a little castor oil into my hands to help them feel soft again.

8. Hair Ends

I smooth a tiny amount onto dry hair ends to reduce the appearance of dryness and add shine.

9. Beard Care

A few drops help soften beard hair and make it easier to manage.

10. Lip Moisture

When my lips feel dry, I apply a very small amount before bedtime.

11. Gentle Massage Oil

I sometimes use it during a relaxing hand or foot massage because it glides smoothly over the skin.

12. Nail Care

Massaging it into my nails and surrounding skin helps keep everything feeling hydrated.

13. Everyday Self-Care Ritual

More than anything, castor oil reminds me to slow down for a few minutes each day. That simple routine has become one of the easiest healthy habits to maintain.

I don’t think there’s a single ingredient that does everything, but I do appreciate products that are simple, versatile, and easy to use. For me, castor oil has earned a permanent place in my home because it’s useful in so many everyday skincare and grooming routines.
