The morning after my mother passed away, the house felt impossibly quiet.
The familiar sounds that had filled every room for years had disappeared. The kettle no longer whistled at exactly seven o’clock. Her favorite chair remained untouched. Even the old clock on the wall seemed louder than usual.
For weeks, I kept expecting to hear her voice calling my name.
Then something happened that I have never forgotten.
While sitting alone in the garden, overwhelmed by grief, a white dove landed on the fence only a few feet away. It remained there silently for several minutes before gently flying toward the sky.
Was it a sign?
I don’t know.
But in that moment, I felt something I hadn’t experienced since losing her.
Peace.
Years later, I shared that story with my pastor.
He smiled kindly before saying,
“Sometimes God doesn’t answer every question we have about heaven. Instead, He gives us the comfort we need to keep walking forward.”
Those words stayed with me forever.
Does God Allow Our Loved Ones to Send Messages?
After losing someone we love, almost everyone asks similar questions.
Can they still see us?
Do they know we miss them?
Are they trying to tell us something?
The Bible gives us great hope about eternal life for those who trust in Christ, but it does not teach that people who have died regularly communicate with the living through hidden messages, dreams, animals, or mysterious signs.
Many pastors encourage Christians to be cautious about claims that a deceased loved one is trying to send a direct message. Instead, they point believers toward something even more comforting: God’s continuing presence, His promises, and the hope of resurrection.
Grandma often said,
“If God wants to comfort you, He doesn’t need mysterious messages. His love is already enough.”
Why We Often Feel Our Loved One Is Close
Grief has a remarkable way of keeping memories alive.
A familiar perfume.
A favorite song.
A birthday.
The smell of homemade bread.
Sometimes these moments feel so vivid that it almost seems as though our loved one is standing beside us.
Psychologists explain that these experiences are common during mourning and can bring comfort without meaning that someone is literally communicating from the afterlife.
For many believers, these moments become gentle reminders of love, gratitude, and the life that person shared with us.
Four Ways God Comforts the Brokenhearted
1. Through Scripture
Many people discover that verses they have read dozens of times suddenly speak directly to their hearts during seasons of grief.
2. Through Prayer
Prayer may not remove the pain immediately, but it reminds us we never carry it alone.
3. Through Other People
Sometimes God’s comfort arrives through a friend who calls unexpectedly…
A neighbor who brings dinner…
Or someone who simply sits beside us in silence.
4. Through Hope
Christian faith teaches that death is not the final chapter for those who belong to Christ.
That hope has carried countless believers through their darkest days.
What About Archangel Michael?
Messages circulating online often claim that Archangel Michael is speaking directly to specific individuals or delivering personal messages from deceased relatives.
The Bible certainly describes Michael as a mighty archangel who serves God faithfully.
However, Scripture does not describe him delivering personal messages from departed family members.
His role is consistently connected with serving God, defending His people, and carrying out God’s purposes—not acting as a messenger between the living and those who have died.
That distinction is important because Christians are encouraged to place their confidence in God’s Word rather than in viral messages shared on social media.
The Greatest Message Your Mother Would Probably Want You to Hear
As I reflected on my own mother, I realized something.
If she could speak to me today, I don’t think she would tell me secret dates.
Or hidden mysteries.
Or lottery numbers.
She would probably say the same things she repeated throughout my childhood.
Take care of your family.
Forgive quickly.
Spend time with God.
Be kind to strangers.
Don’t waste time holding grudges.
Love deeply.
Live honestly.
And never forget that every day is a gift.
Perhaps those are the messages that matter most.
The Legacy They Leave Behind
Our loved ones continue influencing us long after they are gone—not because they whisper from another world, but because their love, wisdom, and example become part of who we are.
Every recipe they taught us.
Every prayer they prayed.
Every act of kindness they modeled.
Every lesson they repeated.
Those things remain alive in the people they loved.
My grandmother used to say,
“The greatest inheritance isn’t money.
It’s the faith and love you leave behind.”
One Final Thought
Losing a mother leaves a space that no one else can fill.
It’s natural to long for one more conversation, one more hug, or one more chance to hear her voice.
While the Bible does not teach that deceased loved ones send personal messages through signs or angels, it offers something even greater: the assurance that God is close to the brokenhearted, that His love never leaves us, and that for those who trust in Him, death is not the end of the story.
Sometimes the greatest comfort isn’t believing our loved one is trying to reach us.
It’s knowing that God never stops reaching toward us.
