Two Men, a White Van and a School Perimeter: Harry and Meghan Condemn β€œReckless” Paparazzi Incident Involving Archie and Lilibet

Samuel Brooks

For Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, the return to Britain was supposed to mark the beginning of a different chapter for their family. Their children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, were starting school in the United Kingdom, while Harry and Meghan attempted to establish a life that balanced their British ties with the privacy they had built around their children.

Instead, only weeks into that transition, an unsettling scene unfolded outside the children’s school.

Two young men carrying backpacks were spotted walking around the perimeter of the school, stopping at different locations and looking into its grounds. School employees and members of Harry and Meghan’s private security team noticed the men, according to multiple reports. The pair eventually returned to a white van and drove away. The Independent

The sight naturally raised questions. Who were the men? Why were they walking around a school and looking inside? And what was inside the backpacks they were carrying?

Police inquiries would later provide an important piece of the answer: the van was a rental, and the men were identified as international photographers. ITV News reported that information connected with the vehicle led investigators to a driver’s licence belonging to an international photographer. ITVX

For Harry and Meghan, however, discovering that the men appeared to be paparazzi rather than unknown intruders did little to make the manner in which they allegedly approached the school acceptable.

Their spokesperson condemned the photographers’ behavior as “extraordinarily reckless,” drawing a sharp distinction between ordinary media coverage of public figures and photographers walking around a school where children were going about their day. The Independent

A troubling sight outside the school

According to ABC News, Archie, seven, and Lilibet, five, are attending school in Britain following the Sussex family’s return from California in late August. The exact school has deliberately not been publicly identified, and neither has the family’s current British residence. ABC News

That privacy makes what happened around the school particularly notable.

The two men reportedly arrived separately. Both were carrying backpacks. They were observed moving around the perimeter of the property, stopping at different points and looking into the school grounds.

They were eventually seen together before returning to the same white van. The Independent

ITV News reported that people familiar with the incident described the men as “scouting out” the school. One source characterized what they were doing as reconnaissance and said they had been around the school for several hours. ITVX

At that point, the reason for their presence was not immediately obvious.

The registration number of the white van was passed to police. Investigators subsequently established that the vehicle had been rented and reportedly traced the reservation information to an international photographer. Authorities came to believe the two men were international paparazzi. ITVX

There has been no public indication that the men physically entered the school or approached Archie or Lilibet directly.

That distinction matters. The confirmed concern centers on the reported behavior around the perimeter and the privacy implications of photographers looking into school grounds—not on an allegation that the men attempted to harm the children.

Harry and Meghan respond

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s response was unusually forceful.

Their spokesperson said photographers behaving this way around a school was “extraordinarily reckless” and described it as an unacceptable intrusion into children’s privacy. The Independent

Their argument was essentially that being a member of a famous family does not erase the normal privacy expected around children at school.

The spokesperson acknowledged a difference between legitimate press activity and photographers circling a school, stopping to look into its grounds and observing children during their school day. The Independent

That distinction is especially relevant because Archie and Lilibet are still very young.

Archie was born in May 2019, while Lilibet was born in June 2021. Unlike their parents, they have not chosen public careers. Harry and Meghan have consequently kept much of their children’s everyday lives away from cameras.

Even after returning to Britain, they have not publicly revealed where their children attend school.

British media outlets have likewise refrained from publishing the school’s location. ITV noted that the British press had followed a request not to identify either the school or the Sussex family’s current home. Foreign photographers and overseas publications, however, are not necessarily governed by the same British press rules. ITVX

That difference appears to be an important part of how the latest incident developed.

This was already the children’s second school

There is another detail that makes the story more complicated: Archie and Lilibet had already changed schools shortly after beginning their new life in Britain.

Their first school apparently was not abandoned because of anything that happened inside the school itself.

Instead, the concern involved the journey.

ITV News reported in mid-September that Harry and Meghan removed their children from their initial school only days into the school year after their private security team became concerned about the daily commute. ITVX

The original journey reportedly involved traffic conditions that could leave the family’s vehicle stationary and following a predictable route at predictable times.

For most parents, traffic during the school run is simply frustrating. For a globally recognizable family accompanied by private security, predictability can be viewed differently.

Harry and Meghan’s security team reportedly concluded that repeatedly taking the same route at roughly the same time could create an unnecessary vulnerability. ITVX

The children were therefore moved.

By September 29, ITV reported that Archie and Lilibet had been attending their new school for roughly two weeks. ITVX

And then came the white van.

The irony was difficult to miss: a school chosen partly to reduce security concerns became the setting for an entirely different privacy incident.

The question of Harry’s protection in Britain

The episode also arrives during a significant review of Prince Harry’s security arrangements.

Harry and Meghan employ private security, but private guards in Britain do not have all of the capabilities available to state protection officers. ITV reported that Harry’s team does not have access to the same intelligence available to government security services. ITVX

The government committee responsible for assessing protection for high-profile royals and public figures—RAVEC—is reviewing Harry’s circumstances following his return to Britain. ITV reported on September 14 that Harry had been informed that a full review would take place now that he was again resident in the country and his children were attending a British school. ITVX

Details of the school incident have reportedly also been passed to the committee. ITVX

That does not mean the photographers’ presence will determine the outcome of Harry’s security review. It does, however, provide a real-world example of the unusual privacy challenges surrounding the family.

Harry has spent years arguing that his circumstances create security issues different from those facing an ordinary private citizen.

The government, meanwhile, has its own procedures for deciding who qualifies for publicly funded protection and under what circumstances.

Those questions are now being reconsidered in the context of a major change: Harry is once again living in Britain with his wife and children.

Why the timing alarmed the Sussexes

The Sussex spokesperson also connected the photographers’ behavior to the broader security atmosphere surrounding the family’s return.

In condemning the incident, the representative specifically referenced a recent incident at RAF Fairford and argued that photographers choosing to behave this way near a school so soon afterward demonstrated poor judgment. The Independent

The point was not that the photographers were accused of involvement in that separate incident. They were not.

Rather, the Sussexes’ position was that lingering around a school and looking into its grounds was particularly irresponsible in a climate in which unusual behavior around sensitive locations could understandably prompt heightened concern.

That distinction is important because some of the earliest descriptions of the school incident naturally sounded ominous: two unidentified men, backpacks, a white van and prolonged observation of a school.

Once police traced the vehicle, however, the picture became considerably clearer.

The available reporting identifies the men as photographers, not as individuals accused of plotting an attack.

The controversy therefore shifted from the identity of the men to the methods allegedly being used to obtain photographs.

A family that has long struggled with paparazzi attention

For Harry, photographers carry an emotional significance that predates his relationship with Meghan.

His mother, Princess Diana, was one of the most photographed women in the world. Harry was only 12 when she died in Paris in 1997 after the car she was traveling in crashed while being pursued by photographers.

Harry has repeatedly spoken publicly about the impact his mother’s death had on him and his relationship with the press.

That history helps explain why incidents involving photographers around his children can carry particular weight for him, although it does not by itself establish the level of danger posed in this specific incident.

Harry and Meghan’s children have largely grown up outside the traditional royal system.

After stepping away as senior working members of the Royal Family, Harry and Meghan established their home in California, where Archie and Lilibet spent much of their early childhood.

Their return to Britain in August 2026 therefore represented a substantial change.

Archie and Lilibet were reportedly settling in

Perhaps the most striking part of the timing is that, only days before news of the photographers emerged, Harry had offered a positive update about his children.

Following their school switch, he indicated that Archie and Lilibet were happy as they adjusted to their new routine. People.com

The family had already navigated an international move and one unexpected change of school.

For two children aged seven and five, that is a significant amount of adjustment in a relatively short period.

Yet the latest incident has once again placed the circumstances surrounding their schooling in public discussion—even though the location itself remains private.

And that is perhaps the central tension surrounding the story.

Harry and Meghan are among the most recognizable couples in the world. Photographs of them have substantial commercial value. Their children, however, spend most of their lives outside public view.

The Sussexes’ position is that a school should represent a clear boundary.

What is actually known

Despite the dramatic circumstances surrounding the story, several points are worth separating from speculation.

Two men carrying backpacks were observed around the perimeter of Archie and Lilibet’s school, according to reports citing school staff, private security and sources familiar with the incident. They reportedly stopped and looked into the grounds before returning to a white van. The Independent

Police traced the van and established that it was a rental. Reporting from ITV and other outlets says information connected with the rental led authorities to identify the men as international photographers. ITVX

There is no publicly reported evidence that the men attempted to enter the school, physically approached Archie or Lilibet, or intended physical harm.

Harry and Meghan’s objection centers on the photographers’ alleged surveillance-like behavior around a school and the invasion of children’s privacy.

That is already serious enough without adding claims unsupported by the available evidence.

The images the photographers wanted remain the unanswered question

One mystery does remain: exactly what photographs were they hoping to obtain?

Neither Archie nor Lilibet regularly appears at public royal events. Their parents share glimpses of family life selectively, and candid photographs of the children are relatively uncommon.

That scarcity makes images of them potentially valuable to celebrity publications.

But obtaining those images around a school raises a very different set of privacy questions than photographing Harry or Meghan arriving at a public engagement.

The Sussexes’ spokesperson emphasized precisely that difference.

Whatever the photographers hoped to capture, the family’s position is that observing children through the perimeter of their school crossed a line.

And while the identities of the school and the family’s British home remain protected, the episode demonstrates how difficult preserving that boundary may be.

For now, the children remain at their new school, while the family’s broader security arrangements are under review.

The white van has been traced. The men have reportedly been identified. The initial uncertainty surrounding who they were has largely been resolved.

But the incident leaves Harry and Meghan confronting the same question that has followed their family across continents: how do two internationally famous parents allow their children to have an ordinary childhood when cameras remain interested in following them?

For Archie and Lilibet, a school day should simply be a school day.

The events outside their school have shown just how difficult keeping it that way can become. ITVX
