Long before Tim Curry became the unforgettable face of The Rocky Horror Picture Show, frightened generations as Pennywise in It, or made audiences laugh in Clue and Home Alone 2, he experienced a loss that changed his childhood forever.
Curry was just 11 years old when his father, James “Jim” Curry, suffered a devastating stroke.
And decades later, Tim could still remember what his father told him as an ambulance prepared to take him away:
“Look after your mother.”
Those words would become especially painful because Tim never got the ending every child hopes for.

Tim’s childhood looked nothing like Hollywood
Timothy James Curry was born on April 19, 1946, in Cheshire, England.
His father was a Methodist chaplain in the Royal Navy, while his mother, Patricia “Pat” Curry, later worked as a school secretary. Tim also had an older sister, Judith.
Because of his father’s naval career, stability wasn’t exactly part of young Tim’s life.

His father suffered a stroke
Tim was 11 when his father had a stroke.
It was terrifying enough for a child to witness.
But Curry remembered one tiny moment from that day with remarkable clarity.
As his father was about to be taken away in an ambulance, he turned his attention toward his young son.

“Look after your mother.”

After graduating from Birmingham University in 1968, Curry pursued professional acting.
His first major opportunity came with the London production of Hair.
There was one problem.

Frank-N-Furter made him immortal
In 1973, Curry originated the role of Dr. Frank-N-Furter in Richard O’Brien’s The Rocky Horror Show.
Two years later came The Rocky Horror Picture Show.
Initially, the movie wasn’t an obvious blockbuster.
Then something extraordinary happened.
Midnight audiences discovered it.
Fans began dressing as the characters.
They shouted responses at the screen.
They returned again and again.
Curry’s corseted, fearless, gloriously theatrical Frank-N-Furter became one of cinema’s most recognizable cult characters.
And yet his father had never known his son wanted to act.
Curry refused to become only one character
Many performers would have struggled to escape a role as enormous as Frank-N-Furter.
Curry kept moving.
He played Rooster Hannigan in Annie.
Wadsworth in Clue.
Darkness in Legend.
The frightening Pennywise in the 1990 television adaptation of Stephen King’s It.
The suspicious hotel concierge Mr. Hector in Home Alone 2: Lost in New York.
He also built an enormous voice-acting career, eventually introducing younger generations to his unmistakable voice through characters such as Nigel Thornberry.
Curry received three Tony Award nominations and continued working across theater, movies, television, animation and music.

In 2012, Curry suffered a major stroke.
