Long before the royal wedding, the Oprah interview, Spare, the move to California and years of public tension between Prince Harry and the Royal Family, there was a weekend at Sandringham that allegedly gave some of Harry’s oldest friends their first real glimpse of the woman he had fallen in love with.
According to royal biographer Tom Bower, it did not go well.
Harry reportedly brought Meghan Markle into a social world he had known for years — old school friends, country weekends, shooting parties, drinking and the kind of irreverent banter that had been part of his circle long before he met the American actress. Meghan, according to Bower’s account, immediately challenged jokes and comments she considered inappropriate.
By the time the guests were leaving, Bower claims messages were already flying between their cars.

One reportedly read:
“OMG, what about HER?”
Another was considerably more brutal:
“Harry must be f*ing nuts.”** (The Daily Beast)
The remarks have resurfaced repeatedly as evidence that Meghan supposedly failed to win over Harry’s old circle from the beginning. But there is an important distinction often lost in the viral versions of this story: these messages are allegations contained in Bower’s 2022 biography Revenge. They have not been independently confirmed by the people said to have sent them.
And even Bower’s version of what happened reveals something more complicated than a simple story of Harry’s friends meeting Meghan and instantly disliking her.
It describes the collision of two very different worlds.
Harry Was Excited to Introduce Meghan to His Old Life
When Harry and Meghan’s relationship became public in 2016, the prince was already deeply invested in the romance.
Meghan represented a world far removed from the one in which he had grown up. She was American, an actress on Suits, divorced, outspoken about women’s issues and accustomed to a professional life independent of royal traditions.
Harry’s social circle, meanwhile, included friends dating back to Eton and his younger years.
According to Bower, Harry invited Meghan to a shooting weekend at Sandringham with 16 friends and their partners. The gathering was supposed to provide an opportunity for the woman he loved to become acquainted with people who had known him for years. (The Daily Beast)
Harry was reportedly expecting what he already knew: plenty of jokes, drinking and banter.
What he apparently had not anticipated was Meghan’s reaction.
Bower claimed some of the conversations included jokes touching on subjects such as sexism, feminism and transgender people. Meghan reportedly did not simply sit quietly when she disagreed.
She challenged them.
According to Bower’s account, she repeatedly confronted remarks that conflicted with her values, leaving some members of Harry’s circle feeling that she was policing their conversation. (The Daily Beast)
To Meghan, if the account is accurate, she may simply have been refusing to laugh at material she considered offensive.
To some of Harry’s friends, however, it apparently landed very differently.
Then Came the Messages
Bower claimed Meghan’s behavior became the subject of conversation almost immediately after the weekend ended.
According to his account, some attendees concluded that Meghan had dampened the atmosphere and felt she lacked their sense of humor. As the guests drove away following Sunday lunch, he alleged, messages began circulating among them.
That was when the now-infamous reactions supposedly appeared.
“OMG, what about HER?”
And:
“Harry must be f*ing nuts.”** (The Daily Beast)
Those are the remarks behind the sensational “five-word verdict” headlines that have circulated online.
But they need to remain firmly attributed to Bower’s account. There is no public message thread available for examination, and the friends supposedly involved have not collectively stepped forward to authenticate the exchange.
That distinction matters, especially because Bower’s writing about Meghan and Harry has itself been controversial.
His books have been sharply critical of the couple, and reviewers have questioned the balance of his portrayal. More recently, when Bower published another book about the royals in 2026, a representative for Harry and Meghan attacked his work as containing “deranged conspiracy and melodrama.” Bower has not met the couple. (People.com)
So the Sandringham episode is best understood for what it is: a biographer’s account, attributed to people around Harry, rather than an independently established transcript of what happened.
Yet the Reason for the Alleged Clash Is Almost as Interesting as the Insult
Strip away the sensational language and the story becomes much less straightforward.
According to the account, Meghan wasn’t being accused of arriving and insulting everyone for no reason.
The disagreement supposedly arose because she objected to their jokes.
Bower wrote that some of the banter involved sexism, feminism and transgender issues, and that Meghan challenged guests when she felt their comments crossed a line. Other retellings of the book have described the jokes even more critically. (The Daily Beast)
That changes the interpretation considerably.
Someone sympathetic to Harry’s friends might see a newcomer arriving at a private gathering and repeatedly correcting people she had only just met.
Someone sympathetic to Meghan could see a woman refusing to pretend offensive jokes were funny simply because the people making them were her boyfriend’s wealthy, well-connected friends.
Both interpretations have appeared in commentary about the episode.
What is much harder to dispute is that, if Bower’s account is broadly accurate, Harry was discovering very early that bringing Meghan into his existing social world would not necessarily be seamless.
The woman he was falling in love with did not automatically fit into the culture he had grown up around.
And Harry chose Meghan.
Another Gathering Allegedly Produced More Friction
The Sandringham weekend wasn’t the only episode Bower used to illustrate tension between Meghan and Harry’s friends.
In March 2017, the couple traveled to Jamaica for the wedding of Harry’s longtime friend Tom “Skippy” Inskip.
Once again, Meghan was entering Harry’s established circle.
And once again, according to Bower, some guests came away unimpressed.
The biographer alleged that Meghan complained about aspects of the food and was perceived by some attendees as behaving “princessy” and not making much effort to engage with Harry’s friends. One mother was quoted in Bower’s account as saying, “She wasn’t interested in us.” (The Daily Beast)
Again, those claims are not Meghan’s account of the weekend.
They are recollections attributed to other people.
Yet together with the Sandringham story, they helped create a narrative that would follow the couple for years: that Harry’s relationship with Meghan coincided with increasing distance between him and people who had once occupied major places in his life.
Whether Meghan caused that distance, Harry consciously chose it, friendships simply evolved, or several factors were involved is a much harder question.
Harry Himself Has Told a Very Different Story About Meghan’s Arrival
If Bower’s version depicts Harry’s friends as alarmed, Harry’s own telling of his relationship presents something close to the opposite emotional experience.
For Harry, meeting Meghan was not a warning.
It was transformative.
Their relationship moved quickly, and by November 2017 they were publicly engaged. They married at St George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle, in May 2018.
Whatever reservations other people may allegedly have expressed, Harry did not appear to share them.
He continued moving toward Meghan.
That difference is central to almost every account of this period.
Friends and relatives might have worried that Harry was moving too quickly or changing.
Harry saw a woman with whom he wanted to build his life.
Those two perspectives could coexist — and eventually collide.
William Had Concerns of His Own
Harry later revealed in his memoir Spare that his brother William urged caution as the relationship became increasingly serious.
According to Harry, William encouraged him not to rush.
Harry did not receive the warning as neutral brotherly advice. He became frustrated by the way Meghan was being discussed and by what he perceived as assumptions about her background and profession.
The relationship between the brothers subsequently deteriorated dramatically.
Harry wrote that during a 2019 confrontation at Nottingham Cottage, William described Meghan as “difficult,” “rude” and “abrasive.” Harry claimed the argument escalated into a physical altercation in which William knocked him to the floor.
William has not publicly provided a detailed version of that alleged confrontation.
By then, however, the conflict had become far bigger than whether Harry’s friends liked his girlfriend.
Two brothers who had spent much of their lives publicly side by side were becoming estranged.
Meghan Was Entering an Extraordinary Environment
There is another piece of context worth remembering when revisiting those early stories.
Meghan wasn’t simply meeting a boyfriend’s friends.
She was entering one of the most unusual families and social systems in the world.
Dating Prince Harry meant her clothes, facial expressions, friendships, family relationships and behavior could become international news.
The transition happened rapidly.
Before Harry, Meghan was recognizable primarily to viewers of Suits. Within months of their relationship becoming public, she was being scrutinized globally as a potential member of the British Royal Family.
Even an ordinary disagreement at a private weekend could later become material for books and headlines.
And that is precisely what happened.
An alleged exchange of text messages between friends leaving a weekend gathering is still being discussed roughly a decade later.
Harry and Meghan Ultimately Chose a Life Outside the Working Monarchy
By January 2020, Harry and Meghan had reached the decision that would transform their relationship with the Royal Family.
They announced their intention to step back as senior working royals.
The couple eventually settled in California with their children, Archie and Lilibet, while pursuing commercial and charitable projects outside the institution.
What followed is familiar territory.
The Oprah Winfrey interview.
The Netflix documentary.
Harry’s memoir Spare.
Public allegations and counterclaims.
Court battles.
Years of speculation about Harry’s relationships with his father and brother.
And constant discussion about whether reconciliation might ever be possible.
In 2026, Harry and Meghan returned to Britain with their children, but Buckingham Palace formally reaffirmed that they remained non-working members of the Royal Family. Recent reporting has shown that the boundaries surrounding their royal status remain clear even as their circumstances continue to evolve. (AP News)
Seen from that distance, the alleged Sandringham weekend can appear almost prophetic.
Harry brought two worlds together.
They reportedly did not understand one another.
Eventually, Harry left one of those worlds behind.
But Did Meghan Really Drive Harry Away From His Friends?
That is where the viral version becomes too convenient.
It is tempting to draw a perfectly straight line from “Harry must be f***ing nuts” to Harry’s later estrangement from portions of his old life.
Real relationships rarely work that neatly.
Harry was an adult making his own choices.
His priorities changed.
He became a husband and father.
He became increasingly hostile toward elements of the British tabloid press.
He developed serious disagreements with members of his family.
And he repeatedly argued that his decisions were about protecting Meghan and their children rather than allowing his wife to dictate his life.
In January 2026, while testifying during litigation against Associated Newspapers, Harry rejected the idea that information about him had routinely leaked through his friends, declaring, “My social circles were not leaky.” He became emotional when discussing the effect years of media battles had had on Meghan, saying the experience had made his wife’s life “an absolute misery.” (ABC News)
Whatever outsiders believe about his decisions, Harry has remained remarkably consistent on one point.
He believes defending Meghan is part of defending his family.
The Five Words Survived Because They Fit a Much Bigger Story
Perhaps that is why the alleged message has endured.
“Harry must be f*ing nuts.”**
It is shocking enough to become a headline, intimate enough to sound like something never intended for public consumption, and perfectly positioned at the beginning of a relationship that would eventually alter the British monarchy.
But its significance should not be exaggerated.
We do not know that every one of Harry’s friends felt that way.
We do not have independent verification of the text exchange.
We do not have Meghan’s account of the Sandringham gathering.
And the claim originates with an author whose portrayal of the Sussexes has been criticized as relentlessly hostile; Harry and Meghan have strongly rejected his more recent work. (The Times)
What we do have is a revealing story about incompatibility.
According to the account, Harry’s friends believed Meghan was humorless and confrontational.
According to the same account, Meghan believed some of their jokes crossed lines involving sexism and other sensitive subjects.
Those are two radically different ways of describing the exact same room.
Nearly a Decade Later, Harry Still Chose Meghan
The most interesting thing about the alleged verdict may ultimately be what Harry did after hearing — or eventually learning about — the doubts around him.
He didn’t end the relationship.
He proposed.
He married Meghan.
They had two children.
They stepped away from royal duties.
They moved across an ocean.
And despite years of pressure, criticism, family tension and endless predictions about the state of their marriage, they remain together.
That does not prove Harry’s friends were wrong about every concern they may have had, any more than their alleged dislike of Meghan proves they were right.
It simply reveals where Harry made his choice.
The story often gets packaged as five devastating words supposedly delivered by friends after meeting Meghan.
But the more revealing story is what came afterward.
Harry was reportedly warned.
His friends allegedly couldn’t understand the relationship.
His brother later urged caution.
The differences between Meghan and Harry’s old world became increasingly visible.
And Harry kept moving in the same direction.
Toward her.
A decade later, those alleged private messages remain fascinating precisely because they capture what may have been one of the earliest signs that Prince Harry’s old life and his future with Meghan were going to be very difficult to keep in the same room. (The Daily Beast)
