Presley Gerber Checked Into a Luxury Rehab Seeking Help — Hours Later, Cindy Crawford’s Son Was Found Unresponsive at 27

Sarah Jenkins

Presley Gerber entered a Santa Monica rehabilitation facility on Saturday night seeking help with substance-use issues. By the following morning, the 27-year-old son of Cindy Crawford and Rande Gerber was unresponsive, emergency services had been called, and paramedics were desperately trying to save him.

He was pronounced dead at 9:45 a.m. on September 20, 2026.

Now investigators are trying to piece together what happened during the few hours between his arrival and his death. Police are treating the case as a suspected overdose and have reportedly been looking into the possible source of drugs, but the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner has not yet determined Presley’s official cause or manner of death. An autopsy has been completed, with further testing still pending. (Los Angeles Times)

The distinction matters. There are already dramatic headlines surrounding Presley’s final night, but the investigation is still active and some of the most important answers may take months.

He Arrived at the Facility Only Hours Before His Death

According to the Los Angeles Times, Presley checked into Resolutions Living in Santa Monica at approximately 10 p.m. Saturday, September 19.

By around 9:35 the following morning, police were responding to the property after calls involving both an overdose and cardiac arrest.

Ten minutes later, Presley was pronounced dead. (Los Angeles Times)

ABC News similarly reported that he had checked into the high-end rehabilitation facility the day before staff found him dead and that Santa Monica police were investigating the death as an overdose. Police said there were no signs of foul play. (ABC7 San Francisco)

What has not been established is the final medical explanation for what killed him.

The medical examiner completed Presley’s autopsy on September 21 but deferred the cause and manner of death while additional tests and studies are performed. Officials have said that process could take several months. (People.com)

The ‘Luxury Complex’ Was a $7.7 Million Santa Monica Property

The facility where Presley spent his final night was hardly the institutional-looking rehabilitation center many people might picture.

Resolutions Living operated from a seven-bedroom Santa Monica mansion valued at roughly $7.7 million, according to reporting by the Los Angeles Times. The program advertised treatment for mental-health conditions, trauma and addiction, including treatment for people experiencing co-occurring disorders. (Los Angeles Times)

Other reporting described upscale amenities at the property, which helps explain why photographs of its polished exterior and landscaping have attracted so much attention since Presley’s death. (Page Six)

But the expensive surroundings aren’t the central question.

What investigators need to establish is what happened after Presley arrived.

Reports Say Presley Did Not Appear Sober When He Checked In

One of the most significant claims about Presley’s final hours comes from unnamed sources cited by TMZ.

Those sources said Presley appeared to be under the influence of an unidentified substance when he arrived Saturday night while seeking help for substance-use problems. (TMZ)

Because that information comes from anonymous sources rather than an official medical finding, it should not be treated as a definitive conclusion about what substances, if any, were in his system.

Toxicology testing is expected to be crucial.

Police are meanwhile investigating the apparent overdose and trying to determine where any drugs involved may have come from. The Los Angeles Times reported that investigators were attempting to trace the source. (Los Angeles Times)

TMZ separately reported that investigators interviewed other people staying at the facility as part of that inquiry. (TMZ)

Presley Had Been Trying to Get Better for Years

Focusing only on the final hours risks missing an important part of Presley’s story.

He had repeatedly tried to address his mental health and substance use.

In a 2023 appearance on the Studio 22 podcast, Presley spoke candidly about depression and other difficulties, explaining that he hoped his own experiences might eventually help someone else escape a similarly dark period. (AP News)

He later began a social-media project called “Mental Health Mondays,” encouraging people to talk more openly about emotional struggles that are often kept hidden. Reuters noted that the series became part of his effort to use his experiences to help others. (Reuters)

Earlier this year, Presley also discussed undergoing treatment for addiction. Entertainment Weekly reported that he publicly described receiving ibogaine therapy and spoke about the experience as part of his attempt to heal. (EW.com)

His death came not because he had never sought help, but amid a long and complicated effort to find it.

He Reportedly Had Around-the-Clock Support Before His Death

New reporting has also revealed how intensive some of that support had become.

TMZ reported that Presley had frequently been accompanied in recent months by a sober coach who traveled with him and provided around-the-clock assistance.

It remains unclear whether that coach was present at the Santa Monica facility on the night Presley died. (TMZ)

That detail makes his death particularly difficult for those around him.

His family had resources.

He had sought treatment.

He had people trying to help him.

And he himself had publicly expressed a desire to recover.

Yet by Sunday morning, he was gone.

His Parents Had Stood Beside Him During His Recovery Journey

Cindy Crawford and Rande Gerber were not distant observers of what their son was experiencing.

Sources close to the family told PEOPLE that both parents remained deeply involved in Presley’s life and had consistently supported him through his struggles. Cindy was described as “heartbroken,” while the family was said to be in “total shock.” (People.com)

Their recent photographs with Presley make that involvement visible.

In May, Cindy and Rande joined their son at a We Are Enough mental-health event. Cindy shared her pride in him as he participated in conversations about mental health.

Then on June 11, Presley appeared with both parents at another We Are ENOUGH event in Malibu, where he participated in a discussion about his experiences. It became his last major public appearance with his parents. (People.com)

Three Months Later, Those Family Photos Carry a Different Weight

Presley spent much of his childhood in front of cameras.

He was born in 1999, the first child of Crawford and Gerber. His sister, Kaia, arrived two years later.

Both children eventually followed their mother into modeling.

Presley signed with IMG Models as a teenager and made his runway debut at 16. He went on to work with brands including Calvin Klein and Dolce & Gabbana and appeared with Cindy in a Pepsi commercial during the 2018 Super Bowl. (AP News)

There are therefore hundreds of polished photographs documenting his life.

But some of the images that resonate most after his death are the ordinary family ones — Presley as a blond child, Presley beside Kaia, and the four Gerbers together long before his struggles became public.

Kaia Had Recently Spoken About What Her Brother Was Going Through

Only weeks before Presley’s death, Kaia Gerber spoke publicly about her brother’s experiences.

Reuters reported that in an August Vogue interview, Kaia discussed the effect his struggles had had on their family and the importance of confronting those subjects openly. (Reuters)

Her comments now read very differently.

Presley had increasingly chosen to make parts of his struggle public, even though he came from a family accustomed to protecting its private life.

For him, that openness had a purpose.

He wanted someone going through something similar to feel less alone.

His Final Months Included Both Struggle and Hope

That tension runs through Presley’s final public statements.

He wasn’t presenting recovery as easy.

He spoke about treatment, medication, depression, addiction and the complicated process of trying to understand what worked for him.

Yet he also kept trying.

In March, he publicly discussed another addiction treatment experience and the fear that accompanied it. Entertainment Weekly reported that he nevertheless described the experience as meaningful in his effort to heal. (EW.com)

In June, he was discussing mental health publicly with his parents nearby.

In the months before his death, according to TMZ, a sober coach was regularly providing intensive support. (TMZ)

And on September 19, Presley entered another treatment facility.

Less than 12 hours later, he was dead.

Police Are Now Trying to Answer a Difficult Question

If toxicology ultimately confirms an overdose, investigators will still have to establish what Presley took and where it came from.

The Los Angeles Times reported that police were looking into the source of the drugs allegedly involved. (Los Angeles Times)

TMZ reported that other residents of the rehabilitation facility were interviewed as investigators pursued that question. (TMZ)

But there has been no public finding that the rehabilitation facility or another resident supplied Presley with drugs, and no such conclusion should be drawn simply from the fact that he died there.

The investigation remains ongoing.

Cindy and Rande Are Facing the Loss of Their Only Son

Presley was Cindy and Rande’s only son.

The couple also shares daughter Kaia, now 25.

Following Presley’s death, a representative for the family asked for privacy during what they called a “very difficult and painful time.” (AP News)

Friends and people from Presley’s past have since begun sharing memories of him.

Former girlfriend Charlotte D’Alessio posted personal photographs and wrote that Presley “deserved more time” and “more life.” Friends including Brooklyn Beckham and Paris Hilton also publicly remembered his kindness. (EW.com)

Those tributes tell a different story from the police reports.

One is about how Presley died.

The other is about who he was to people who knew him.

The Biggest Answer Has Not Come Yet

For now, the most important fact surrounding Presley’s death is also the easiest to lose amid dramatic headlines:

His official cause of death remains undetermined.

Police are investigating a suspected overdose. Emergency calls referenced an overdose and cardiac arrest. Presley had entered rehabilitation only hours earlier, and investigators are examining what happened at the property. (Los Angeles Times)

But toxicology and additional medical testing have not been completed.

Until those results arrive, there is a limit to what can responsibly be said about Presley’s final hours.

What is already clear is that his decision to enter treatment Saturday night was part of a much longer battle — one he had increasingly chosen to discuss publicly in hopes that his experience might help somebody else.

Presley Gerber was 27.

He went to the Santa Monica facility seeking help.

By the next morning, his parents had lost their son, Kaia had lost her brother, and investigators were beginning the difficult process of determining exactly what happened. (AP News)
