For years, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have been careful about how much of their children’s lives they place before the cameras. Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet occasionally appear in family photographs, but usually from behind, at a distance, or absorbed in an ordinary childhood moment rather than posing formally.
That is precisely why Meghan’s latest collection of family pictures has attracted so much attention.

In September 2026, the Duchess of Sussex shared a series of rare new photographs of Archie, 7, and Lilibet, 5, as part of a birthday tribute to Prince Harry, who turned 42. The pictures offered another glimpse into a family life that is normally kept largely private. ELLE
Rare photos reveal a childhood largely lived away from cameras
Rather than formal royal portraits, the photographs Meghan has increasingly chosen to share feel like pages from a private family album.
Her September birthday tribute included Lilibet skiing with her father, the family riding a quad bike through the countryside, and other snapshots of the children enjoying outdoor activities. Other images released around the same period showed interests ranging from cycling and photography to archery. ITVX
The pictures are particularly striking when compared with the carefully staged royal photographs that surrounded Archie during the earliest days of his life.
Archie was born in May 2019, while his parents were still working members of the Royal Family. Lilibet followed in June 2021, after Harry and Meghan had moved to California.
Since then, the children have grown up with considerably less public exposure.

Yet during 2026, Meghan gradually opened that family album a little wider.
Archie and Lilibet’s summer adventures
In June, Meghan shared another collection of family pictures with the caption “Springing into summer.”
One showed Harry playing with Archie and an enormous soccer ball on the grass. Another captured Lilibet in a playful Beyoncé T-shirt. The pictures again avoided the feeling of an official portrait and instead documented ordinary family life. ABC News
Then came Father’s Day.
Meghan posted a particularly affectionate photograph of Harry embracing both children, writing that Archie and Lilibet were lucky to have him. Vogue
A month later, an even larger set of rare family photos arrived.
Meghan’s July “Summer Holiday” collection documented the family’s travels through Europe. Archie was photographed inside an airplane cockpit, while Lilibet was captured jumping into a swimming pool. Another photograph showed all four family members together on a beach. People.com
Their trip also carried considerable family significance. The Sussexes visited Althorp, Princess Diana’s childhood home, where Harry and the children paid tribute at Diana’s resting place. People.com
For Archie and Lilibet, these were family experiences. For followers who had watched Harry grow up, however, the photographs carried another layer: Diana’s younger son was now introducing his own children to places connected with their grandmother.

Meghan’s photos show how quickly the children are growing
Perhaps the biggest surprise in the newer photographs is simply the passage of time.
The baby once introduced to the world as Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor is now seven. Lilibet, whose earliest years were spent almost completely outside the public gaze, is five.
Meghan has generally continued to protect their identities even when sharing photographs. Many images show the children from behind or at angles where their faces aren’t clearly visible.
But other details have become increasingly recognizable — especially their hair.
In earlier garden photographs, Archie and Lilibet’s reddish hair immediately attracted attention. Meghan shared pictures of the children exploring blooming roses, including one showing Lilibet beside her mother and another showing Archie examining the flowers.
Those quiet photographs — flowers, gardens, bicycles and family embraces — are a long way from palace balconies.
And that appears to be the point.

A new chapter for the family
The newest photographs also document a major change.
Harry, Meghan, Archie and Lilibet returned to Britain in 2026, and Meghan has since shared glimpses of their new life there. A September video showed Lilibet riding a bicycle along a country path while Archie ran nearby. Another moment showed Archie splashing through a puddle in rain boots, while Harry was seen fishing with the children from a small boat. TMZ
The family subsequently had to change the children’s school because of security and commuting concerns, according to reporting surrounding Harry’s September birthday. ITVX
Yet Meghan’s own photographs concentrate on something considerably simpler: childhood.
Skiing. Riding bicycles. Playing outside. Traveling with their parents. Hugging their father.
And across the growing collection of rare photos, Archie and Lilibet appear less like distant royal figures and more like two children whose parents have tried to preserve a substantial part of their childhood away from public view.
Perhaps that is why each new photograph attracts so much attention. The public has seen relatively little of them — and suddenly, those tiny glimpses are showing just how quickly Harry and Meghan’s children are growing up.
