Jennifer Lopez turned Vogue World: Milano into one of the week’s most photographed moments when she unexpectedly stepped onto the runway beside a much younger man.
The man was 24-year-old Italian tennis star Lorenzo Musetti, and the striking 33-year age difference — combined with their glamorous black-and-white outfits — made the photographs difficult to ignore.
But the story behind the images is rather different from what a single photograph might suggest.
Lopez arrived at the September 22 event at Milan’s Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II wearing an elaborate black Dolce & Gabbana bustier dress covered with lace and beaded details. She completed the look with sheer opera gloves and a spectacular necklace featuring a nearly 75-carat tourmaline. Vogue

Then Musetti appeared.
The tennis player was making an unusual detour from the court, participating in Vogue World dressed in Bottega Veneta. His look was deliberately unconventional: an oversized white double-breasted jacket, a semi-sheer top and loose dark trousers.

As the third act of the show began, Musetti walked toward Lopez.
He reached out his hand.

The pair then walked into the center of the Galleria before Musetti guided her through a playful turn as they danced beneath the historic glass dome.

In reality, it was part of the show.

Why the pairing looked so dramatic
The visual contrast was almost tailor-made for photographs.
Lopez was enveloped in black lace, sparkling embellishments and a full skirt. Musetti towered beside her in his bright white oversized jacket.
At roughly 6 feet 1 inch tall, the Italian athlete also appeared noticeably taller than Lopez, particularly when she stood beside him during their dance.

Once their brief dance was over, Lopez returned to being one of Milan Fashion Week’s most closely watched guests.
Later that night, she attended a Dolce & Gabbana event at Cipriani wearing an entirely different ensemble: blue jeans beneath a dramatic floral duster finished with burgundy faux-fur detailing.
By the following morning, she had transformed again, appearing in a coordinated leopard-print Dolce & Gabbana outfit consisting of a cropped trench, matching shorts and matching shoes. Vogue

They show Lopez laughing, taking Musetti’s hand and allowing the athlete to spin her through the center of one of Milan’s most famous landmarks.
Seen without context, the photographs could easily inspire speculation about the handsome younger man suddenly appearing at her side.
Seen as a complete sequence, however, they capture something much simpler: a carefully staged Vogue World performance between a Hollywood superstar and a 24-year-old tennis player making his fashion-world debut.
And for a few minutes in Milan, it made for one very memorable pairing.
