Inside Melania Trump’s Modest Childhood Home in Slovenia — Rare Photos Show the Life She Knew Before Trump Tower

Sarah Jenkins

Long before the marble, gold and sweeping views of Manhattan, Melania Trump knew a dramatically different kind of home.

Before she became a model working in European fashion capitals, before she moved to New York, and decades before she entered the White House as first lady, she was Melanija Knavs, a girl growing up in the small Slovenian town of Sevnica.

Her childhood unfolded during the era when Slovenia was still part of socialist Yugoslavia. The surroundings preserved in photographs from Sevnica bear little resemblance to the glamorous residences that would later become associated with her name.

There was an ordinary apartment building. Three small bedrooms. A working family. A textile-factory town surrounded by green hills and the Sava River.

And yet, Melania’s own later recollections complicate the idea that she grew up in deprivation. Her family appears to have enjoyed a relatively comfortable life by local standards, with travel, cars and an elegantly maintained home. The Independent

The actual apartment block where Melania grew up

The building still stands in Sevnica.

It is a multi-story residential block with balconies and a simple façade — the sort of building that would barely attract attention if its former resident had not eventually become one of the world’s most recognizable women.

A later resident of the Knavs family’s former apartment described it as having three small bedrooms and called it “very normal.” The Independent

That description provides an intriguing contrast with the homes that would come later.

But “normal” did not necessarily mean bleak.

In her memoir, Melania remembered the apartment as beautifully decorated by her mother, Amalija. She described family holidays and concerts and recalled her father having several cars. Her account portrays a childhood that was comfortable despite taking place under Yugoslavia’s socialist system. The Independent

Her parents built the world around her

Melania was born in Novo Mesto in 1970 but grew up in Sevnica with her older sister, Ines.

Her mother, Amalija Knavs, worked in the textile industry, while her father, Viktor Knavs, worked in the automobile business. Contemporary accounts describe Amalija as a patternmaker at a children’s clothing factory. AP News

Fashion therefore wasn’t completely foreign to Melania’s childhood.

Her mother’s work placed fabrics, patterns and clothing close to family life, and Melania has spoken warmly about the care her mother put into appearances and their home.

There was also an unusually close bond between mother and daughter that continued for decades. When Amalija died in January 2024 at 78, Melania publicly remembered her as a source of strength and warmth in the family. AP News

Melania’s family before the fame

Family photographs from those years reveal a version of Melania almost unrecognizable from the meticulously styled public figure who would emerge decades later.

They show a young family living an ordinary domestic life — children sitting with their parents, casual clothes, modest interiors and none of the elaborate staging that would surround Melania’s later public appearances.

Then the family moved

As Melania grew older, the family’s circumstances improved.

The Knavses eventually left the apartment block and moved into a detached two-story house in Sevnica. Reports from the town describe the property as being located in an area of individual homes rather than the working-class apartment complex where Melania spent her earlier childhood. The Independent

The Knavs family’s later house in Sevnica

The difference is immediately visible.

The later home is low and wide, with a lawn, large windows, balconies and a garage. It was still far removed from a Manhattan penthouse, but it represented a considerable change from the apartment block.

The family retained connections to Sevnica even after Melania’s life took her abroad.

For locals, the buildings eventually became curiosities. After Donald Trump’s political rise, visitors began arriving in Sevnica specifically to see where his wife had grown up. The Independent

A teenager who was beginning to look beyond Sevnica

Melania’s transformation began surprisingly early.

As a teenager, her appearance caught the attention of Slovenian photographer Stane Jerko. At around 16, she began posing for photographs, creating some of the earliest professional images of the future first lady.

Rare photographs of young Melania

These early photographs show a very different Melania.

Her dark hair is natural and voluminous. The styling is unmistakably late 1980s. There is none of the highly polished presentation that would later become part of her public image.

Yet the beginnings of her modeling career were already there.

She eventually moved to Ljubljana and pursued modeling more seriously before working elsewhere in Europe. By 1996, she had relocated to New York. AP News

That move would alter virtually everything.

From Sevnica to Manhattan

New York represented an extraordinary change of scenery.

The quiet streets of Sevnica were replaced by Manhattan. Modeling assignments expanded. Her social circle changed.

Then, in 1998, she met Donald Trump.

They married in 2005, and the residences associated with Melania became increasingly extravagant — most famously the family’s three-level Trump Tower penthouse overlooking Manhattan.

The visual contrast is difficult to miss.

A girl who once lived with her parents and sister in a three-bedroom apartment in Yugoslavia was eventually living high above Fifth Avenue.

Yet Melania maintained unusually strong ties to her Slovenian family.

Her sister Ines also settled in New York.

Family, by numerous accounts, remained at the center of Melania’s private circle even as her public life became increasingly extraordinary. The Independent

The Sevnica that remained behind

Sevnica itself is perhaps the most revealing photograph of all.

It is a small riverside town overlooked by a centuries-old castle, surrounded by wooded hills and countryside. The Sava River cuts through the landscape, while railway tracks and residential neighborhoods run through the town below.

It is an unexpectedly quiet beginning for a woman whose adult life became intertwined with some of the most photographed addresses in America.

The apartment building remains.

So does the family’s later house.

And photographs of both preserve a period of Melania’s life that can easily disappear beneath everything that followed.

The White House, Mar-a-Lago and Trump Tower inevitably dominate the modern image of Melania Trump. But those places represent only the later chapters.

Her earliest chapter looked considerably simpler: a three-bedroom apartment in Sevnica, two daughters growing up together, a mother working with clothing and patterns, a father in the automobile business, and a teenage girl beginning to imagine a life beyond her small Slovenian hometown.
