I Used to Wash My Blueberries the Wrong Way… Until I Learned This Simple Trick

Victor Hugo

Every time I brought home a fresh container of blueberries, I did exactly the same thing.

Straight into a bowl.

Quick rinse under the tap.

Back into the refrigerator.

A day or two later…

They were soft.

Wrinkled.

Sometimes even moldy.

I thought I had simply bought a bad batch.

Then a produce manager at my local grocery store shared a tip that completely changed how I stored fresh berries.

“Don’t wash them until you’re ready to eat them.”

It sounded backwards.

But after trying it myself, my blueberries stayed fresh much longer.

Should You Wash Blueberries as Soon as You Get Home?

Usually, no.

If you plan to store blueberries for several days, it’s best to keep them dry in the refrigerator and wash them just before eating.

Extra moisture can encourage mold growth and cause berries to spoil more quickly.

The exception is if you’re following a specific produce-washing routine and are able to dry them completely before storing.

1. Store Them Dry

Leave blueberries unwashed in their original ventilated container or transfer them to a container lined with a paper towel.

The paper towel helps absorb excess moisture.

2. Remove Damaged Berries

One moldy berry can cause nearby berries to spoil faster.

Discard any soft, crushed, or moldy fruit.

3. Wash Right Before Eating

Place the berries in a colander and rinse them gently under cool running water just before serving.

There’s usually no need for soap, detergent, or bleach.

4. Dry Them Well

If you’re washing more than you plan to eat immediately, gently pat the berries dry with a clean towel or use a salad spinner designed for delicate produce.

5. Freeze Extras

If you won’t eat them within a few days, freeze them.

Spread dry berries in a single layer on a baking tray until frozen, then transfer them to a freezer-safe bag.

One Final Thought

The secret isn’t avoiding water altogether.

It’s waiting until you’re ready to enjoy your blueberries before rinsing them.

That one small habit can help keep them fresher, firmer, and more enjoyable for longer—without any special products or complicated tricks.
