Growing up, my grandmother had a simple rule: the best recipes didn’t have to be expensive or complicated. One of her favorite kitchen habits was soaking black beans before cooking them and adding a splash of vinegar at the end. She always smiled and said that simple, wholesome meals were meant to be enjoyed for a lifetime.
Curious, I started doing the same. It wasn’t about finding a miracle food—it was about embracing a nourishing tradition that made healthy eating feel easy.
My Simple Black Bean Recipe
You’ll need:
- 1 cup dried black beans
- Plenty of water for soaking
- 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar or red wine vinegar
- Garlic, onion, and herbs for flavor (optional)
Soak the beans overnight in plenty of water. The next day, drain and rinse them well before cooking until they’re tender. Once they’re fully cooked, stir in the vinegar and season with your favorite herbs and spices.
I love serving them with brown rice, roasted vegetables, or a fresh salad.
Why I Keep Making This Recipe
Black beans are naturally rich in fiber and plant-based protein, making them a filling addition to many meals. Adding a splash of vinegar at the end gives them a bright, tangy flavor that I really enjoy.
Since I started eating more bean-based meals, I’ve found it much easier to prepare satisfying lunches and dinners without relying on heavily processed foods.
The Habits That Made the Biggest Difference
This recipe is only one part of my daily routine. I also try to:
- Eat a variety of colorful fruits and vegetables.
- Include whole grains in my meals.
- Stay active with a daily walk.
- Drink plenty of water throughout the day.
- Get enough restful sleep each night.
I’ve learned that it’s these small, consistent habits that help me feel my best.
Today, this simple black bean recipe is still one of my favorites. It’s affordable, delicious, and easy to prepare, and it reminds me of my grandmother’s belief that good health starts with everyday choices. While there’s no single secret to a long life, enjoying wholesome foods and caring for yourself day after day is a tradition that’s always worth keeping.
