I Couldn’t Believe What My Neighbor Was Making With an Egg and a Condom… Then I Tried It Myself

The first time I saw it, I honestly laughed.

An egg.

A condom.

And a pot of hot water.

I thought someone was playing a joke.

But my neighbor smiled and said, “Just wait until you see the result.”

Curiosity got the better of me.

A few minutes later, I was genuinely surprised. It wasn’t a magic trick or anything strange—it was simply a clever kitchen hack that creates a perfectly shaped, sausage-like egg that’s fun to slice for salads, sandwiches, or party appetizers.

Sometimes the most unusual ideas turn out to be the most interesting.

Why This Trick Works

When an egg cooks, the proteins in the white and yolk become firm.

Using a food-safe mold changes the shape of the egg while it cooks, creating a long, even cylinder instead of the usual oval shape.

The result?

Every slice has the same amount of egg white and yolk, making it look surprisingly neat.

What You’ll Need

  • 1 fresh egg
  • A new, unused, food-safe, unlubricated, unflavored latex condom (or, even better, a food-grade silicone tube made for cooking)
  • Kitchen string or clips
  • A pot of gently simmering water

If you have a food-grade silicone mold designed for cooking, that’s the safer and more appropriate option.

How It’s Done

Carefully crack the egg into the clean mold.

Tie or clip the open end securely.

Place it into gently simmering—not rapidly boiling—water.

Cook for about 12–15 minutes.

Once cooked, transfer it to cold water for a few minutes before carefully removing the mold.

Slice it into even rounds.

The cross-sections look almost too perfect to be homemade.

Fun Ways to Serve It

Once sliced, I like to use it for:

  • Sandwiches.
  • Green salads.
  • Homemade sushi rolls.
  • Breakfast wraps.
  • Deviled egg-style appetizers.
  • Lunchboxes.

The uniform slices make everything look a little more polished.

My Favorite Egg Salad

Whenever I make this recipe, I usually turn part of it into a quick egg salad.

You’ll need:

  • 2 cooked eggs, sliced or chopped
  • 1 tablespoon plain Greek yogurt
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
  • Chopped chives
  • Black pepper
  • A pinch of paprika

Mix everything together and serve on whole-grain toast or with sliced cucumbers.

It’s simple, satisfying, and one of my favorite high-protein lunches.

One Final Thought

Sometimes the internet’s strangest kitchen tricks turn out to be surprisingly clever.

While I’d recommend using food-grade cooking molds whenever possible, this hack reminded me that cooking doesn’t always have to be complicated to be fun.

After all, the best recipes aren’t just about the ingredients—they’re also about the little moments of curiosity that make us smile in the kitchen.
