Christina Applegate Reveals a Mysterious “Weird Spot” on Her Cheek in First Video After Months in the Hospital

After months away from public view, Christina Applegate finally appeared on camera again — and the moment was far more personal than a traditional Hollywood comeback.

The 54-year-old Dead to Me and Married… with Children star shared a new video on September 21, 2026, following a hospital stay that reportedly lasted nearly four months. With freshly colored blonde hair, casual clothes and a smile, Applegate seemed determined to share a lighter moment after an extraordinarily difficult stretch. But she also pointed out something viewers might otherwise have noticed on their own: a new dark mark on her cheek. (EW.com)

She Mentioned the Spot Herself

Rather than avoiding the subject, Applegate incorporated it into the same dry humor that has characterized many of her candid health updates.

“Fresh hair color, new weird spot on my cheek haha,” she wrote, before thanking hairstylist Dave Stanwell for brightening her “cloudy day” and sending love to her followers. (Reuters Connect)

In the accompanying video, Applegate posed in jeans, a dark top and a zip-up hoodie, turning her head so viewers could see her newly refreshed blonde hair. The darker area on her cheek was also visible. She subsequently shared another image that provided a closer look at the pigmentation. (E! Online)

But despite online curiosity, Applegate has not publicly explained what caused the mark. There is therefore no confirmed basis for connecting it to MS, her hospitalization or another medical condition. (¡HOLA!)

That uncertainty makes her own reaction particularly characteristic of the actress: she acknowledged it, joked about it and moved on to the happier reason she was appearing on camera.

Her Return Came After Nearly Four Months Away

The video mattered for another reason. It marked Applegate’s first new video appearance following an extended hospitalization.

She was reportedly admitted to a Los Angeles hospital in late March and returned home around the beginning of August. Although Applegate has lived publicly with multiple sclerosis since announcing her diagnosis in 2021, reports have differed in how specifically they characterize the reason for this particular hospital stay. Applegate and her representatives have not publicly provided a detailed diagnosis explaining the entire hospitalization. (¡HOLA!)

When reports about her hospitalization emerged earlier in the year, Applegate reassured supporters that she was concentrating on her health and getting stronger. By August, she was finally back home. (People.com)

Her September video therefore offered something fans had been waiting months to see: Christina herself.

Her Life Changed After Her MS Diagnosis

For viewers who remember Applegate as the vivacious Kelly Bundy, the past several years have revealed a very different side of the actress.

She announced in August 2021 that she had been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, a disease affecting the central nervous system. Applegate has since spoken openly about symptoms including severe pain, fatigue and difficulties with mobility. Public appearances increasingly required a cane, and acting itself became much more physically demanding. (People.com)

The contrast with her earlier career is striking.

Applegate became famous while still very young through Married… with Children, before building a career that included Anchorman, The Sweetest Thing, Samantha Who? and, decades later, her acclaimed performance as Jen Harding in Dead to Me.

Finishing Dead to Me after her diagnosis became particularly difficult. As her condition progressed, the physical realities of working changed dramatically, and Applegate ultimately stepped away from the kind of on-camera acting schedule she had maintained for decades.

Still, she has continued finding ways to communicate directly with people.

Alongside actress Jamie-Lynn Sigler, who also has MS, Applegate co-hosts the MeSsy podcast, where conversations about chronic illness are often strikingly candid. She has also discussed her experiences in her memoir, You With the Sad Eyes. (People.com)

She Has Faced Serious Health Challenges Before

MS is not Applegate’s first major health battle.

In 2008, at 36, she was diagnosed with breast cancer. She subsequently underwent a double mastectomy and later spoke publicly about that experience. (EW.com)

Years later came MS, followed by increasingly difficult symptoms that transformed ordinary aspects of her life.

Yet throughout those experiences, Applegate has often resisted presenting herself through polished celebrity language. Her comments can be funny, angry, vulnerable and painfully matter-of-fact — sometimes all at once.

That is partly why something as simple as mentioning a mysterious mark on her cheek felt so unmistakably like her.

Her Daughter Has Been Beside Her Through the Changes

One constant through Applegate’s recent years has been her daughter, Sadie Grace LeNoble.

Mother and daughter have appeared together at several major events, including the 2023 SAG Awards and the 2024 Emmys. At the latter, Applegate walked onto the stage with a cane and received an emotional standing ovation.

Following her 2026 hospitalization, Applegate also shared a glimpse of the welcome-home decorations Sadie had prepared for her, another small reminder of the private family life waiting beyond the hospital walls. (Vulture)

A Small Video That Meant Much More

There was no red carpet surrounding Applegate’s return. There was no carefully staged interview or dramatic announcement.

Instead, there was a woman standing in casual clothes, enjoying freshly colored hair after spending months in the hospital.

There was also that unexplained spot on her cheek.

Applegate did not present it as a revelation or offer a medical explanation. She simply noticed it, called it “weird,” laughed and continued showing off her hair. (Extra)

And perhaps the most important part of the post came at the end. After everything that had happened during the preceding months, Applegate had a simple message for the people who had continued following her journey: “Love you and love to you all out there.” (Extra)

For an actress whose life has changed dramatically since her MS diagnosis, the brief appearance wasn’t really about a hairstyle — or even the mysterious mark that attracted so much attention.

It was about being home, being visible again, and letting people know she was still there.
