When 26-year-old Playboy model Anna Nicole Smith married 89-year-old Texas oil billionaire J. Howard Marshall II in 1994, the world was fascinated by their extraordinary age difference.

But when Marshall died just 14 months later, their unconventional love story turned into one of the most complicated inheritance battles in American celebrity history.

Anna believed her husband had promised to provide for her financially. Yet when his estate documents came to light, she discovered something devastating: she was not a beneficiary of his will.

Instead, the bulk of his wealth was directed to his son, E. Pierce Marshall.

What followed was a legal war involving allegations of manipulation, hundreds of millions of dollars, conflicting court rulings, and two trips to the United States Supreme Court.

And the most astonishing part? Anna died before the fight was resolved — and her estate never collected the fortune she had pursued.

J. Howard Marshall II had made his wealth through a long career in the oil industry, including investments associated with Koch Industries.

He met Anna in Houston in 1991, when she was working as a dancer. Over the next few years, he gave her expensive gifts and financial support.

The couple married on June 27, 1994.

Their relationship immediately attracted intense public scrutiny. Some people believed Anna genuinely cared for Marshall, while others questioned whether his wealth was the primary attraction.

Anna maintained that she loved her husband.

But the question of what Marshall intended to leave her would soon become the subject of years of litigation.

The Will That Changed Everything

Marshall died on August 4, 1995, at age 90.

Although Anna was his wife, his estate plan did not provide her with an inheritance.

His son, E. Pierce Marshall, was the principal beneficiary of the family fortune.

Anna claimed her husband had intended to establish a trust that would provide her with substantial financial support after his death.

She accused Pierce of interfering with those plans to prevent her from receiving the money.

Pierce denied the allegations and argued that his father had deliberately chosen not to include Anna in his estate.

The disagreement became far more than an ordinary inheritance dispute. It raised questions about promises, estate planning, alleged interference, and which courts had the authority to decide the case.

Anna’s legal fight unfolded in two different court systems.

In Texas, the probate proceedings focused on Marshall’s estate plan and whether his son had improperly influenced it.

Meanwhile, Anna had filed for bankruptcy protection in California. When Pierce brought a claim against her in that proceeding, she responded with a counterclaim accusing him of interfering with the financial gift she said her husband had promised.

The outcomes were dramatically different.

A Texas probate court rejected Anna’s challenge to the estate plan.

But the California bankruptcy court ruled in her favor, finding that Pierce had interfered with her expected gift.

For a moment, it appeared that Anna might win an enormous financial award.

The California bankruptcy proceedings produced a judgment widely reported at approximately $475 million.

A federal district court later reduced the award to approximately $89 million.

Those figures were staggering.

Anna had gone from being excluded from her husband’s estate plan to holding a court judgment worth tens of millions of dollars.

But winning a judgment and actually receiving the money were two very different things.

Pierce’s legal team continued challenging the decisions, arguing that the bankruptcy court did not have the authority to issue a final ruling on Anna’s claim.

The dispute became a question not only of who deserved the money, but also of which court had the legal power to decide.

In 2006, Anna appeared at the United States Supreme Court.

The justices considered whether federal courts could hear certain claims related to an inheritance dispute that was already being addressed in state probate court.

The Supreme Court ruled in Anna’s favor on that jurisdictional question.

It was a significant legal victory, but it did not mean she had won Marshall’s fortune.

The Court had opened the door for her federal claim to proceed. The underlying financial dispute still had to be resolved.

Anna’s fight was far from over.

Both Sides Died Before the Battle Ended

In June 2006, E. Pierce Marshall died at age 67.

Just eight months later, on February 8, 2007, Anna Nicole Smith died at age 39 from an accidental prescription drug overdose.

Neither lived to see the final resolution of their legal battle.

But the litigation continued through their estates.

Anna’s surviving daughter, Dannielynn, had a potential financial interest in the outcome as her mother’s heir.

The inheritance dispute had now outlived the billionaire, his son, and the woman who had fought for a share of his wealth.

The Supreme Court Reverses Her Legal Fortune

In June 2011, the Supreme Court delivered another major ruling, this time in Stern v. Marshall.

By a 5–4 vote, the justices concluded that the bankruptcy court lacked the constitutional authority to enter a final judgment on Anna’s counterclaim, even though Congress had given it statutory authority to hear that type of matter.

That ruling was devastating for Anna’s estate.

It undermined the enormous award that had once seemed within reach.

The decision also became an important precedent in American bankruptcy law, extending its significance well beyond the celebrity dispute.

Even after the Supreme Court’s 2011 ruling, Anna’s representatives pursued a remaining claim for sanctions connected to the earlier litigation.

They sought more than $44 million.

But in August 2014, a federal judge rejected that attempt, finding insufficient grounds for the requested sanctions.

The decision effectively ended the nearly 20-year federal legal struggle without delivering an inheritance payout to Anna’s estate.

What had begun with a controversial wedding in 1994 had become a courtroom battle lasting far longer than the marriage itself.

So Who Actually Got the Billionaire’s Money?

Marshall’s estate plan favored his son E. Pierce Marshall, rather than Anna Nicole Smith.

Anna never secured the inheritance she claimed her husband had promised her.

There is, however, an important distinction: Marshall had given Anna substantial gifts and financial support while he was alive. The Supreme Court acknowledged those gifts in its account of the case.

She therefore did not receive an inheritance from his estate, but she had not received nothing during their relationship.

For years, the public watched the dispute as a dramatic battle between a glamorous young widow and her wealthy husband’s family.

But behind the enormous figures were real questions about family loyalty, promises, financial dependence, and trust.

Anna believed she had been denied what her husband intended to give her. Pierce maintained that he was defending his father’s wishes.

The courts ultimately upheld the outcome that excluded Anna from Marshall’s estate.

Her daughter did not receive the multimillion-dollar inheritance Anna had spent years pursuing.

And what once looked like a potential $475 million victory ended without an inheritance recovery.

Nearly two decades of litigation, two Supreme Court battles, and millions of dollars in legal claims — all stemming from a marriage that lasted just 14 months.

Do you think Anna Nicole Smith should have received part of her husband’s fortune, or should his written estate plan have been the final word?
