Somewhere near Moon Lake in Montana’s Beartooth Mountains, a 15-year-old hiker was hurt in terrain where getting injured can quickly become a much bigger problem.
He had suffered head injuries and a possible broken arm.
Rescuers knew he needed medical care.
But there was another problem.
Getting him out.
The teenager was in remote mountainous terrain, and the civilian rescuers responding to the emergency did not have the helicopter hoist capability needed for the evacuation.
So a request for military assistance went out.
At approximately 7 p.m. on August 20, 2026, an HH-60M Black Hawk lifted off from Billings.
Inside were soldiers from the Montana Army National Guard and a civilian rescue technician.
Their mission was simple to describe and much harder to execute:
Find the injured teenager, get him off the mountain, and bring him to medical care. (Army)
The Beartooth Mountains can turn a rescue into an aviation mission
The Beartooth Mountains are exactly the kind of place people seek out because they feel far removed from everyday life.
But that remoteness becomes a serious problem when someone gets hurt.
A person injured near a road can be reached by an ambulance.
A person injured deep in mountainous terrain may need rescuers to hike in, stabilize them, carry them over difficult ground, or call for an aircraft capable of reaching places ordinary emergency vehicles simply cannot.
That’s what rescuers were confronting on August 20.
Red Lodge Fire Rescue and Search and Rescue were involved in the response, but officials determined that the evacuation required helicopter hoist capabilities unavailable through civilian rescue assets.
The request eventually reached the Air Force Rescue Coordination Center.
And that brought the Montana Army National Guard into the mission. (Army)
The call went to the 1-189th
The soldiers tasked with responding belonged to the 1-189th General Support Aviation Battalion.
Their aircraft was an HH-60M Black Hawk.
For most Americans, the Black Hawk is instantly associated with the military.
It is one of the most recognizable helicopters in the U.S. armed forces.
But helicopters in the Black Hawk family aren’t useful only on battlefields.
Their ability to operate in difficult environments makes them invaluable when civilian emergency responders need capabilities they don’t have themselves.
On this evening, the Black Hawk wasn’t carrying soldiers into combat.

Five people were aboard
The crew that departed Billings included:
- Chief Warrant Officer 3 Zach Lundgren, pilot in command
- Chief Warrant Officer 2 Andrew Wass, co-pilot
- Sgt. Derek Cordes, crew chief
- Sgt. Cody Lilyquist, medical officer
- Eric Barbeau, a Billings Fire Department rescue technician (National Guard)
That list tells an important part of the story.
This wasn’t simply an Army operation.
It was a coordinated rescue bringing military aviation together with civilian emergency-response expertise.
Everyone had a role.
The pilots had to safely position the aircraft.
The crew had to manage the helicopter and rescue equipment.
Medical personnel had to be prepared for an injured patient.
And the rescue technician brought specialized civilian emergency experience into the aircraft.
The Black Hawk left Billings at approximately 7 p.m.
The aircraft departed the Billings Limited Army Aviation Support Facility at approximately 7 p.m.
Its destination was the incident site in Carbon County.
Somewhere below, the teenager was waiting.
The official Army account doesn’t dramatize what happened next.
Military reports rarely do.
It simply says the crew rescued the injured hiker.
But the reason the helicopter had been requested tells us why the mission mattered.
The teenager couldn’t simply be walked out.
The civilian assets on scene didn’t have the hoist capability necessary to complete the evacuation.

Head injuries made time matter
Officials reported that the 15-year-old had sustained head injuries and a possible broken arm.
A broken arm is painful.
A head injury can be far more concerning.
And when the injured person is deep in remote terrain, the challenge isn’t only providing first aid.
It’s getting that person somewhere doctors can properly evaluate them.
Every mile of wilderness between a patient and a hospital becomes part of the emergency.
That is where aviation changes everything.
A journey that might be extraordinarily difficult over land can become dramatically shorter once a helicopter is able to extract the patient.
Then the Black Hawk reached him
For anyone on the ground, there is something unmistakable about the sound of a military helicopter approaching.
Long before the aircraft is directly overhead, you can often hear the rotor blades.
For an injured teenager waiting in remote terrain, that sound meant something very different from what it might mean on a military training range.
It meant the way out had arrived.

By approximately 9 p.m., the crew was back
The entire flight mission lasted about two hours.
The Black Hawk departed around 7 p.m.
The teenager was recovered and transported for medical treatment.

Two hours.
That’s all the mission required.
But for the injured teenager and the people waiting for him, those two hours could have made an enormous difference.
And this wasn’t the Guard’s first mountain rescue

And the unit has experience with exactly the kind of difficult terrain that makes these missions necessary.
A year earlier, another HH-60M from the same battalion rescued three hikers suffering from hypothermia and illness in the Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness near Princess Lake.
That 2025 mission also involved coordination with civilian medical personnel.

Different hikers.
Different emergency.
Same basic problem.
The mountains had made ordinary evacuation extremely difficult.
And military aviation provided another option.
The Black Hawk has a very different job here
When people see a Black Hawk, they often picture combat.
Troops jumping out.
Weapons.
Deployments.
Military exercises.
But National Guard aviation has another side that receives far less attention.
When floods arrive, helicopters can reach isolated communities.
When wildfires spread, Guard aircraft and personnel can support emergency operations.
When people become stranded in terrain that ordinary rescuers cannot safely reach, military helicopters can become flying rescue platforms.
The August 20 mission is a remarkably clean example.
No battlefield.
No enemy.
No military objective in the traditional sense.
Just an injured kid who needed to get off a mountain.
The hoist capability was the key
This detail is what makes the story more than simply “Army helicopter transports injured hiker.”
Civilian rescuers were already responding.
The problem wasn’t a lack of people willing to help.
It was a lack of a specific capability.
The rescue required a helicopter hoist.
That equipment allows rescuers and patients to be raised or lowered while the helicopter remains airborne — essential when terrain makes landing impossible or unsafe.

They train for situations where mistakes can have enormous consequences.
Most of that preparation is designed around military readiness.
But those same capabilities can become lifesaving tools when emergencies happen at home.
A pilot’s ability to maneuver an HH-60M.

A medic’s training.
A hoist system designed to operate where a helicopter can’t land.
Put them together, and a military unit suddenly becomes an extraordinarily capable search-and-rescue team.

Look at the image.
The mountains stretch across the background.
A rescuer moves over exposed rock.
And above him is the unmistakable silhouette of a Black Hawk.
There are no streets.
No ambulance parked nearby.
No emergency room around the corner.
That’s exactly why the helicopter matters.
In a city, an injured teenager might be minutes from an ambulance.
Here, geography itself was part of the emergency.
The aircraft effectively brought the rescue route to him.
For parents, the story is easy to understand
A 15-year-old goes hiking.
Then something goes wrong.
Suddenly, he’s injured somewhere difficult to reach.
Head injury.
Possible broken arm.
Rescuers are trying to help.
But they can’t easily get him out.
For a parent receiving that information, the technical details probably wouldn’t matter much.
There would really be only one question:
Can somebody reach my child?
On August 20, the answer became yes.
The Montana Army National Guard could.
Five rescuers, one teenager
Military news often revolves around enormous numbers.
Thousands of soldiers.
Billions of dollars.
Hundreds of aircraft.
Entire divisions.
This story is almost the opposite.
One helicopter.
Five people aboard.
One injured teenager.
One two-hour mission.
That’s part of what makes it memorable.
The United States didn’t need the Black Hawk for a massive military operation that evening.
One person needed it.
And that was enough reason to launch.
Search and rescue is built on cooperation
The mission also shows how emergency response often works behind the scenes.
There isn’t always one heroic agency that does everything.

The request moved through the rescue coordination system.

The crew came home safely too
That detail deserves attention.
Search-and-rescue crews don’t eliminate danger simply because they’re helping someone else.
Mountainous terrain creates hazards for aircraft.
Weather can change.
Visibility can deteriorate.
Hoist operations require precision.
The goal of a rescue mission isn’t simply to save the patient.
It’s to save the patient without creating additional casualties among the rescuers.
On August 20, the crew completed the mission and returned safely to Billings.
Patient out.
Crew home.
Aircraft home.
That’s what success looks like.
And the teenager reached medical care
Officials did not release a detailed public medical update beyond saying the teenager had suffered head injuries and a possible broken arm.
They did confirm the part that mattered immediately:

For privacy reasons, we may never know every detail of what happened to him afterward.
We don’t need to.
The mission had accomplished what rescuers were asked to do.
Get him out.
Get him to doctors.
Give him the chance to recover.
The Army’s role doesn’t always look like war
It’s easy to forget this side of the National Guard.
Soldiers can spend years preparing for missions most Americans hope they never have to perform.
But sometimes that training is used much closer to home.
A wildfire.
A flood.
A missing person.
An injured hunter.
A stranded hiker.
Or a 15-year-old hurt deep in the mountains.
On those days, the military aircraft overhead isn’t there because something has gone wrong between nations.
It’s there because something has gone wrong for one person.
Somewhere around 7 p.m., the sound changed
Before the Black Hawk arrived, the teenager’s situation was defined by what rescuers didn’t have.
They didn’t have an easy road out.
They didn’t have terrain suitable for an ordinary evacuation.
And civilian rescue assets didn’t have the helicopter hoist capability the mission required.
Then the rotor noise came over the Beartooths.
An HH-60M appeared above the mountains.
Inside were pilots, soldiers, a medic and a civilian rescue technician who had come for one reason.
A 15-year-old needed them.
Two hours later, the teenager was no longer stranded in the wilderness.
He was at a medical facility.
The Black Hawk was back in Billings.
And another mission that could have become a tragedy instead became a reminder of something easy to overlook:
